why do mods become mods?

Interesting question.

I moderated a game forum ages ago at the height of forum boom. I can only speak by myself. In my heart I just wanted to help the community. In reality I just wanted to push for a sub-forum creation about a subject not related to the forum and help to grow content for that.
I did contribute to that forum before hand with tournament reports and short articles, so becoming a moderator was just the next level step to get more tools to do it better. Sadly moderator job comes with a baggage. I didn't have interest in controlling users and check reports and shit.
In the end it was a thankless job and I started to lose motivation to create content to that forum. Of course there were no compensation and yet there were some push to make moderators perform their job. Also, seeing the internal politics of the forum was very exhausting even thou I had no interest in that. I ended up just quitting that forum quietly and unceremoniously.
Sincerely it has to be a special kind of person to actually enjoy this sorta activity (take as both positive and negative remark).

mods do get paid here on akp.
how much

I've been a mod several times and it's not easy. When you have a forum as contentious as this one can be, it's doubly hard. Without fail, there will be times that something you say or do will be misconstrued and feelings hurt on both sides. You can't please everyone. It takes a really patient and thoughtful person to be a good mod.
So why do mods become mods? Well, my stints as moderator made me pretty sure I did not want to be a moderator again. It's just not for me, I don't have the right personality, but those stints did teach me to be introspective and less quick to fly off the handle. I'm not going to answer for anybody, but I would hope that all those becoming mods are doing so because they believe they have what it takes and are there to show others that they really can be that patient and thoughtful person I mentioned above.
As for me, ultimately, my interests (and talents if I may say so) lay elsewhere which is why I am tech! But I really admire those willing to be moderators and willing to learn that not every situation will be black and white, learn the value of looking at things from other angles and be willing to grow and learn from any missteps and continue on with that knowledge. That last part is really important and the only way to truly move forward.

mods do get paid here on akp. Same with awards/tech.
That's good that there's a profit-sharing system. Work shouldn't be free. Also good for accountability.

But I'd work for free, i wanted to be staff to assist in growing the platform and making a fun environment for everyone.
I pushed for guilds to come back and for the k-lounge section. And custom badges etc. I really appreciate my position and that my ideas get heard and not dismissed. I really like my team too and its a lot of fun working with johnny and The-Sheriff they are more wiser and i selfishly like knowing how k-industry works so that's a bonus too.
Many pros, sometimes it's not easy and i feel a lot of pressure to do wel, and create growth but that's just part of any business just gotta keep trying.
but on the old forum mods didn't get paid right?
-
i'm an unpaid mod, i do it bc i want to help a friend. i'm not around that much anyway, so i help out where i can.
-
-
they need to make me a mod right now. I am currently filing a long complaint against allkpop for not making me a mod.
THEN WHO WILL MAKE NEW THREADS IN ALL CAPS FOR EVERYONE
but on the old forum mods didn't get paid right?
why?
i'm not getting paid on the new forum, do you have some kind of secret weapon i can use on this new forum staff payment deal?

Oh my gosh, thank you so much Is it stressful? You're one of the best and nicest mods I've ever encountered
-
Yeah... always stressful to me but i put it on myself. Team is great!
Aw, I hope that it gets better and don't work yourself too hard. That's great that you have a good team and is being an AKP mod more of a side job or your full time (I'd imagine it being a smaller job for money on the side but I'm just curious, you don't have to answer if you don't want )
