So the guild is deserted....no one may see this, but yesterday "How You Like That" (a snippet at least) was played on morning talk radio here in Sacramento.
The hosts, who are white guys in their 50s, were talking about a story in the news about how only a handful of artists can afford concerts that charge as much as Taylor Swift. Two of them were Bad Bunny and....Blackpink.
They had heard of Blackpink (one guy said, "l don't like saying that name" --he doesn't like the imagery of it) but didn't know any songs. Their producer, who is much younger and maybe a Blink, played a little of "How You Like That" with the bada-bing-badda-boom section. They didn't hate it, but it wasn't their kind of music. One made a joke about "where's the banjo music?" They (or rather the producer) also put "bada-bing-badda-boom" in the "Clips of the Week" recap today (Friday).
I think that is about as far as Kpop is going to get in mainstream U.S. radio. Some interest, but only full plays when Colombia or Universal is promoting a specific song and willing to pay the money. Rabid fans threatening to cancel and doxx on-air hosts and staff who don't play their favorite group's songs don't help either.
Here's hoping Blackpink renews. I've been following them since 2017. I don't even know what American pop music sounds like any more.
