  • diverse is not the most accurate description here imo

    I don't mean Hollywood diversity...

  • Maybe it's because i'm also a south east asian, i don't find it diverse.

It is more diverse of you think in terms of Southeast vs East Asian looks.

There are SGO members who would fit into the lineups of AKB or SNH and others who look more like the girls for BNK or JKT.

Why do I watch survival shows? This!

  • Yumi is Japanese.

The other members of SGO48 are all Vietnamese.

  • It is more diverse of you think in terms of Southeast vs East Asian looks.

There are SGO members who would fit into the lineups of AKB or SNH and others who look more like the girls for BNK or JKT.

You can easily find a more diverse looking pool in China.

And, the same can be said to BNK48.

  • Cute vietnamese girls but how old are they? :pepe-cross:

Guys are interested in the age! lol

Okay in 2019, the last time I saw an age related article, the average age of SGO was 18.5 years-old.

Since 2nd generation recruiting is still going on now, SGO is still all 1st gen. In that case, the average of the group should be around 20.5 now. More or less as there had been graduations.

  • It is more diverse of you think in terms of Southeast vs East Asian looks.

There are SGO members who would fit into the lineups of AKB or SNH and others who look more like the girls for BNK or JKT.

Most girls in BNK or JKT could easily fit into AKB or SNH lineup tbh. They all follow the same East Asian (particularly leaning towards Japanese aesthetics) beauty standards of fair skin, big eyes, etc.

In this regard, I'd say JKT & MNL seem more truly diverse, since they have the biggest mix of EA & SEA looks, whereas SGO & BNK tend to lean more East Asian.

  • Also on this poster of the people that participated at the audition of SGO48, there is Yui who is Chinese Vietnamese who was a member of the Vietnamese J-pop yume kawaii Idol girl band Niji Universe Inc. then got rejected at the audition of SGO48.

Yui is now a member of the Vietnamese J-pop yami kawaii anti-idol style girl band UniDia Check also called Uniche.

  • nothing specific really

just not diverse in any way from my perspective

It is diverse in terms of asian standards. Racial diversity, body diversity, and age diversity aren't really going to be factored in a jpop inspired group centered around the school girl image. But at least we see some different facial types and skintone types! Something that isn't really a thing in east asian countries.

    thats true

diversity in appearance is rarer in east asian countries esp in pop groups but what I meant was, from all those pictures at multiple glances, not one stood out to me so I dont think this is "diverse" beauty to me at least

they're all pretty though so nothing against them

if we're nitpicking, every single individual has something different but that's not something worth pointing out specifically is it

No one stood out to you from the East Asian perspective, I guess. But diverse means there are definitions of beauty from other perspectives too.

I actually think there are girls in the list who fit East Asian K/C/JPOP standards but those standards aren't the sole arbiters in deciding what is beautiful in Vietnam. So yes, I think the OP is accurate in saying there is diverse beauty in that group.

Why do I watch survival shows? This!

  • Stop lying. Bnk48 does not have dark skin member while in the viet version we see some tan skin members.

Namneung, Jib, Piam, Nine, Fifa, Mobile, Kheng, etc. are all as tanned as the tannest SGO members.

They're not unpopular either, with Mobile & Namneung being the center of 2 of BNK48's most viewed MVs (Koisuru Fortune Cookie & Doddidong)

If any of them were to debut in a K-Pop girl group, they'd definitely get one of those 'black pearl' titles like Yuri from SNSD (and they're all definitely at least a shade darker than her.)

  • There is an audition for the second generation for the Vietnamese Idol girl band SGO48 which is currently ongoing. If you want to have a second pool of new faces, here it is ;-) :

They're exactly the same skin tone. Actually if you're looking for girls with melanin, it's pretty clear BNK has more of them.

In terms of diversity, I'd say there's a more typical Viet look than a typical Thai look. If you grab a random Vietnamese person, chances are they'd lean looking more East Asian. If you grab a random Indonesian person, they'll most likely more Austronesian/Malay (although Indonesia is also ridiculously diverse, but most of the population are Austronesians.)

If you grab a random Thai person, there's no idea what you'd end up with. The population is so mixed that there's almost no typical Thai look. You can have someone who looks completely Chinese, or someone completely Malay looking.

As for the girl who's 'having a tomboy concept pushed on her' - you clearly know nothing of BNK. Piam has been open about her sexuality throughout her entire career as an idol. She's dated girls, is happy with her look, happy to express who she is. She's been very vocal about this. There's been many close-minded 'fans' who keep telling her to change to a more traditional feminine appearance, thinking they're somehow helping her, but she's happy with the way she is. So before you go off mouthing about some stranger's sexuality - maybe try learning more about them or keep your mouth shut.

  • You're being pretty ignorant and making all sorts of assumptions based on whatever narrative you're trying to push.

I'm not trying to push any narrative. I googled the members and all i saw were pale skintones. Google doesn't lie!

you literally cherry picked photos with some bad lighting lol. Google told the real story, I saw more photos of them being light than dark.

Thai people do not have malay looking people unless you visit southern thailand (and even then they are a minority), so there is no way you can call that "typical". Its typical in Malaysia and Indonesia.

You want a real thai look? Go North or Northeast. Or find a Mon or Khmer looking person in the areas near Cambodia/Burma. Its clear you are very ignorant on thai culture when you mentioned Malay lmao. They barely have an influence in the country!

  • Sorry, I counted from right to left so I though about Như Thảo but it is Sunny from left to right. Bad for me.

Yeah, Sunny has quite a dark skin compared to other members in SGO48 but has a clearer skin than Sachi who has the darkest skin in SGO48.

Sunny is one of the least popular members in SGO48 as she was also ranked amongst the lowest at the third handshake event of SGO48.

Yeah, the members of BNK48 (Bangkok48) have in general a more darker skin compared to the members of SGO48 (Saigon48) in general.

The members of CGM48 (ChiangMai48) which is another Thai sister group of BNK48 have a more clearer skin in general compared to BNK48.

I prefer the looks of the members of CGM48 more in general compared to the looks of the members of BNK48 in general.

One day, I met a girl who has Chinese ancestry and Thai ancestry.

I have Chinese ancestry and Vietnamese ancestry.

She said to me that she has dark skin because she has Thai origins and that you have clearer skin because I have Vietnamese origins.

I think that in general Thai people have a darker skin compared to Vietnamese people.

  • I think it is absolutely unnecessary to keep comparing Thai and Vietnamese singers and Thai and Vietnamese skin color and YT views. Both peoples have many talented and many visually appealing artists with pop cultures that are growing.

As someone who followed KPOP/K-Ent and now heavily into CPOP/C-Ent, I found the large Thai presence in both Korea and China to be very inspirational. Here is a SEA nation whose entertainers and products had successfully competed in the market places of Korea and China.

As a Vietnamese-Chinese, I can say that Vietnamese are closer in culture and appearance to East Asians than Thais. But at the same, we have not produced the artists with the same appeal as the Thais. There is no denying it.

I think Vietnamese entertain has a good role model in Thailand. Thais are proof that SEAsians can break into the biggest markets in Asia.

Why do I watch survival shows? This!

  • They fact you think there's no Thai malays just show you're incredibly ignorant and trying to talk about. Go to the south and you'll see plenty of Malay influences. Phuket has similar Peranakan culture as Penang.

People from the North of Thailand and the Northeast can also look completely different - so none of them is a 'real Thai look'.

Thai isn't a real ethnicity anyways - it's a made up ethno-national concept that came about in the pre-WWI years to drum up nationalism. Thai Chinese have been a part of Thailand ever since Day 1. Same with Thai Malays. Same with Thai Mons/Khmers. None of them are more Thai than the other. Some cultures can really live together like this peacefully without making race an issue - believe it or not.

You literally accuse Piam of having the management pushing a tomboy concept to her, while ignoring the complete possibility that this is her real self. That's ignorant and narrow-minded AF.

  • Thanks for being a normal person. I have nothing against Vietnamese entertainment or Vietnamese people, I even try to support it so we can grow together as fellow SEA. But I have to admit, I do notice that many Vietnamese people tend to compare themselves against Thailand. And often, not just compare but to drag Thai people/artists down in order to push themselves up (like the Ms-Not-Nice person, who has a weird obsession). It's possible to support your artists without dragging others down.

  • Yes, you just fixed yourself in a certain narrative. Yes, Google doesn't lie but filter does. Do you know you can better see the skin tone in unfiltered video? And, a Viet user has come to affirm the SGO's girl had paler skin. Lol.

Funnily, someone believed those in the south did not have legs to travel out of the area. Lol. This is typical look in the south of Thailand.

Go North? There is the Chiangmai based CGM48. You can check it out. Members surely do not look Khmer. So, what is your real Thai look? The look like this

  • LMAO

Ms-Not-Nice should look at the quotation above, according to your fellow countrymen, SGO has already fired their dark skin members LMAO and how dark skin impacted their ranking LMAO sound pretty colorist and even racist to me, don't know how you, Ms-Not-Nice, managed to call out Thailand as a colorist country in another thread LMAO Knowing how much their dark skin impacted their life, TBH I feel bad for dark skin Viet girls living in such a racist society, living among insecure people who keep talking about skin-tone. LMAO

PS: Talking about youtube obsessed country like Vietnam, I found this picture on twitter, SGO48's youtube subscriber is even lower than newly formed CGM48 lol

No they didnt'. The viet user named and posted the wrong member, look at a later post where they corrected themselves. The real member has dark skin as seen in the OP.

The Japanese girl Yamaishi Natsumi who appears on the following video said in Vietnamese to the Japanese male youtuber Kiki said that she also wants to do her best to have a clearer skin since she lived in Vietnam due to seeing the Vietnamese girls around her who want to have a clearer skin by applying creams.

In general, the Japanese people have a clearer skin than the Vietnamese people.

Kiki said that Japanese also like a clear skin but he said that he didn't pay attention to the skin tone when he was in Japan.

Kiki said that the Vietnamese take a lot of care of their skin to have a clearer skin.

Yamaishi Natsumi has already a clear skin but she wants to do her best even more to have a clearer skin due to the influence of the Vietnamese girls around her.

Yamaishi Natsumi is from Kanagawa and has been living in Vietnam for 3 years now and she is 21 years old.

Yeah, skin colour has importance in Vietnam, in Asia and around the world in general except if you are an albino in Black Arica.

Having a clear skin gives you in general more advantages than having a dark skin.

  • i didn't say that. reread my comment or learn english.

You said "Thai people do not have malay looking people unless you visit southern thailand (and even then they are a minority), so there is no way you can call that "typical". Its typical in Malaysia and Indonesia."

    B*tch please. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/…re%20of%20Malay%20descent.

"Thailand is home to the third largest ethnic Malay population after Malaysia and Indonesia and most Malays are concentrated in the Southern provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani, Yala, Songkhla and Satun. Phuket and Ranong, home to a sizeable Muslim population, also have many people who are of Malay descent. A sizeable community also exists in Thailand's capital Bangkok, having descended from migrants or deportees who were relocated from the South from the 13th century onwards."

Just because they're a minority doesn't mean they're any less Thai. We're a country made up of all ethnicities, all of whom as just as valid as any other. As I said before, just shut up if you have no idea what you're talking about.

lol i do have an idea. Thats why i said they are "not typical" in Thailand except for the South (which i don't know why you had a problem with this comment because its true, you just wanted be a smartass for no reason lol). The malay look is more typical (aka more common) in a Malaysia and Indonesia. Maybe you should try doing some research about your own country honey. If you actually did your research, you'd find that and that there are way more foreigners from Burma, Laos and Cambodia and people barely speak any austronesian influenced language except minorities in the south.

Also look up the definition for the word "typical". Saying "not typical" does not mean "does not exist". That fact that i even had to explain this means you are CLEARLY UNEDUCATED in english.

Just because they're a minority doesn't mean they don't exist - or that they're negligible.

Stop acting like you know our country more than we do lol.

OK - there's people from Burma, Laos & Cambodia and so what does that have to do with whatever we're discussing.

What I said was that Thailand is diverse in looks & ethnicities - East Asian features in the North, Laotian/Khmer features in the Northeast, mixed in the central regions, Malay features in the south - something you're refuting despite it obviously being true.

I don't really know what you're obsessed with Thailand but lol you're looking real dumb.

And yeah, I don't need to try and bring down other people's English because being able to speak English isn't something to be particularly proud of. But if that's something you think makes you feel smarter then OK, poor you I guess if you're that desperate. lol
