Why didn’t 4th gen have a SNSD/Twice like group?

  • I feel that since Girls’ Generation’s reign in 2nd gen, and then with TWICE after them in the 4th gen, there seemed to be a pattern of 9 member ggs reigning supreme in their respective generations.

However, 4th gen broke that mold with how the trend became smaller ggs and appealing to the western market. Could a SNSD/Twice like group with 9 members have survived in Gen 4 or was IZ*ONE the closest we’d get to that? :whatr:

  • 4th gen groups are unique in their own ways , i mean not every groups are destined to be the next SNSD or twice but i still have high hopes for h2h so let's see what's the future holds

  • Would fromis_9 be comparable to Twice? I guess sound is much different and only thing comparable would be size. I think Twice having longevity made groups shy away from groups similar to Twice. They also opted to capture the magic of Blackpink which is why it feels there was smaller groups being created and less brighter songs and concepts.

  • I was sure SME would have a new GG/Twice typ of group, and sure we kind kind of got one in HeartsToHearts even but it have not really fly. I think Twice have kind of block other groups to do simliar concept for many years and today maybe the companies think it's a bit to expensive with a lot of members and/or just don't have good enough trainees for big groups. Also, this kind of groups often have a bit of "cute" concepts and cherry Bubble Pop and that kind of music have sadly gotten a bit out of fashion with music more similar to what Blackpink and Aespa are doing being more popular.

Honestly I think that was supposed to be the plan before AESPA debuted. The gg SM was forming WAS supposed to be the next GG but the lineup fell apart. Rumor has it that when Giselle was accepted into SM that’s when the whole “future snsd” plan was scrapped and they opted for a Blackpink type group.

Now SM has scrambled with Hearts2Hearts to have that SNSD 2.0 group but it’s just not taking off (imo). I think SM kinda waited too late and 2020 would’ve been the perfect year to have a group like that (Twice were going into more mature concepts and there was an open space for a fresh gg with cute concepts)

  • - most girl groups since 1st gen are on the smaller side,

    - look at the top 3 ggs of all gen: only Twice had significant big number, IVE is a bit more than average. But the rest have standard size: 3/4/5.

So a successful example like Twice is an unique exception, not the pattern as you think.

    One word

New Jeans was on its way of becoming like SNSD but we all know what happened next

  • It’s no longer the trend. There are too many members and if you want to expand to the West like these companies are doing, having fewer members is better (BP is an example). There are exceptions but fewer members are still ideal. Surely, many companies were monitoring BP's rise and BP only had four members...

Having four members had always been better prior to BP: Fin.K.L, 2NE1, Sistar. If not four then five is still ideal.

I don't think the point was that bigger groups would be better for the companies than smaller groups, but more why we don't have groups similar to Girls' Generation and Twice today. There is kind of "opening" to fill that niche in the market today with a lack of competion. If you pick something more like BP and a 4-5 member group you have a lot more competion to fight against. Overall I feel there is a opening for groups that are more like the 2nd generation/early 3rd generation groups.

First, Girls' Generation and Twice are not similar in the slightest.

There was actually a trend originally set by Twice with big ggs and easier concepts in 4th gen, as many people pointed out here.

So the correct question is why there are not a lot of groups like that in 5th gen. I can only think of 2 reasons:

1/ the trend died down. Too much disadvantages with few advantages,

    2/ NewJeans.

  • Not Similar? In my view they are similar when it comes to the concept, but of cource no group are exact similar and they debuted in different timeperiods. At least they have a lot more common with each other than with BP. You can compare with Girls' Generation vs. 2NE1 and Twice vs. BP.

And not sure what you mean by Twice setting a trend with bigger groups, there have always been groups with 8-9 members since Girls' Generations days and forward. As I said, I understand why the companies maybe prefer smaller groups, because they are a bit easier to handle/less. expensive and also the a bit change in the music style of KPOP. But you will always have a market for a big Girls' Generation/Twice type of group that have a mix of cute concept and bubbly pop music and I think we lack that today.
