Am I the only one who found the 4th gen era quite short !?

Not just you. The fact that we did not even make it a few years into 4th gen before fans started demanding we call groups like New Jeans, H2H and Baemon 5th gen, is kinda crazy.
1st gen lasted from 1989-2002
2nd gen was from 2002-2013
3rd gen was from 2013-2018
and then 4th gen was only from 2018-2021? Like that is way too short and 5th gen does not sound really any different from 4th gen
-
I think that companies tried hard to push for 5th gen because they couldn't really compete with the big groups in 4th gen like New Jeans, IVE, and AESPA.
They had a chokehold, so they started marketing groups as the leaders of 5th gen to circumvent that.
That, in addition to the dominance held by BTS and BlackPink at the time. By the time 4th gen had finally secured themselves as the top, companies were already pushing for 5th gen.

This whole time I had been classifying New Jeans as 4th gen.

Generations are marketing terms and are not to be made sense of outside of that context

why are generations getting shorter?
I feel generations is just a fancy marketing terms to shield newer groups from getting dwarfed by the top groups. It's obvious the 5th gen groups would've been overshadowed by the top 5 4th gen groups at the time. As a fan it didn't really feel like a new gen started because it didn't seem like any major changes happened with sound and concepts. I think this year feels like the shift is happening rather than 2023.

we haven't seen them at their peak yet, but the 5th gen is already slowly taking over
So far there are only 3 groups with hits from 5th generation, but 2 of them haven't been able to elevate their statuses with that. I won't say 5th Gen is slowly talking over.
There is another factor: 4th gen has 2 phases, the groups you haven't seen peak are from later phase, near the end 4th gen.

This is what I've been saying
They know they can't beat the 4th gen so they created their own 5th gen to have their "5th gen records"

Created a whole generation to flex records that are absolutely abysmal

The concept of gens, and which group falls where, gives me so much more stress than it should lol

why are generations getting shorter?
I am unsure as some of the labels and even the KPop generations documentary on KBS said we are still in 4th gen a little over a year ago, but people INSIST, it is 5th gen.

5th gen may have started with Allday/Katseye.
But groups like Illit, Heart, Kiii, Baemon, KIOF, Izna, Meoww are clearly still 4th gen. KIOF and Baemon literally debuted in 2023 which is only five years after 4th gen started in 2018. No way in hell are they 5th gen lol. Plus they are almost all just carbon copies of their 3rd and 4th gen sunbaenim.
Allday and Katseye are unique enough to be classified as 5th gen tbh. Very West heavy vibes, very multicultural, coed members, etc. They dont look and feel anything like the Kpop groups that came before them.

I could believe this, then it would make sense if it started this last year, but people are trying to say it started in late 2021 and I am just like, that is toooooo soon.

Bro, did you remember what happened from 2021-2024? 4th gen literally destroyed everyone else in Korean entertainment.
Next Level dealt the mortal blow to previous gens, then it was a literal avalanche of dominating 4th gen songs from Idle, Ive, Stayc, New Jeans, LSRFM, and Illit.
4th gen finally peaked when Aespa came around full circle and dominated 4th gen's final year on top with Supernova and Whiplash, and then Ive released the last #1 4th gen song (Rebel Heart).
4th gen's peak easily matched 3rd gen's peak of Twice/BP/BTS. And 2nd gen's peak of SNSD/WG/Sistar/2NE1.

Yeah, you know what… maybe 🤔
We’ll see, time will tell
