Pure romance?
Glass Mask although it doesn't have much love story per se. It is almost like a sports anime but with acting. It does have some old school romance although maybe a bit creep for today's sensibility as for the most part is a minor with a much older guy, but it's not in your face stuff and feels old timey idealized.
I liked Karekano, but it didn't finish.
Maybe Clannad is one of the top one, but from that style I like Air better.

I haven't watched too many romance animes tbh, but ig my favorite of the ones in that genre is your lie in april? Ironically, I find the romance to be the weakest part of that series, so if we're judging based on how good of a romance an anime is, I like wotakoi, horimiya, and rascal does not dream of bunny girl senpai. Fruits basket and kaguya sama love is war will probably be joining them once I watch more of those series!

i mean it felt like they did get together by the end of the manga (i even opened here to be sure xD the manga I mean) or at least in the course of their life it is kinda clear they will be together even the other girl who was in love with the main guy felt like she lost lol but hey i kinda like this different approach
but the author didnt wanted to show it because she felt like she didnt wanted to be a typical shoujo? if i recall correctly (too bad i love typical shoujo lol but i guess thats fine the main story is about rendemption)
