If IOI had been permanent…

Maybe the first question is, would IOI have done better than Mamamoo and GFriend in the long run?
It's amazing that aside from TWICE, BP, RV, it gets hard to think of other successful 3rd gen groups aside from Mamamoo and GFriend, that shows how thin the 3rd gen lineup actually had been compared with other gens.
Not sure how IOI would have done in the long run, but one thing is for sure: Somi's career and popularity would have been a whole lot better than it is these days.

IOI wont even be close to Red Velvet.
Their most popular song was Very x3 and it was a gift from JYP, an reject from Twice.

Probably below Red Velvet, equal with GFriend, and above Mamamoo

Honestly I think so. Especially considering that by 2017 Gfriend was beginning to fall off after they released Fingertip.
And IOI was only behind Twice as the best selling 3rd gen gg on Gaon in 2016. So the selling power was definitely there.
And IOI (imo) would have garnered an international/western fanbase faster than Twice could seeing as they had 2 fluent english speakers and their music was more diverse in that it could appeal to korea and internationally (especially with whatta man)
So it’s not really far fetched to think they’d be higher than RV.

IOI were carried by Sejeong and Chungha, basically. There's a reason they call these groups "temporary". Fans only interested in them for a couple of months, basically.
As much as I liked IOI, and it's nice to see their reunions, mostly for the two members above, and maybe Somi and Mina, but there's a reason these groups didn't last more than 2 or 3 years. Just look at what happened with Gugudan. After 4 years, it was over, and it wasn't a massive success. There's no way IOI could rival any other 3rd gen group from the BIG6: MAMAMOO, Red Velvet, Gfriend, Oh My Girl, TWICE, Blackpink.
Thank God, IOI was not permanent, because we got soloist/actress Sejeong, and Chungha.
The same could be said about IZ*ONE. These groups are temporary for a reason, other agencies can choose the most popular members and start their own groups with them.

Were Twice not #1 during 3rd gen ?

IOI was literally up there along with Twice during their run, they were everywhere with CFs, in variety shows.. Tell me you weren't there when they were active lol.. People didn't even know Chungha was from IOI. If anything the most popular members were Sejeong, Somi, Yoojung and Chaeyeon.
The groups don't last longer because of financial reasons, not because fans just suddenly drop out. Once they get popularity and a fanbase, companies want the idols for themselves and it's much more beneficial to get a whole smaller pie, rather than 1/11 of a bigger pie.

Probably below Red Velvet, equal with GFriend, and above Mamamoo
This is an awful take. Mamamoo was above GFRIEND from 2017 and on, and they were either equal to or above RV depending on the year.
IOI would've been in the mix and turned the Top 5 into a Top 6.
Anyone who thinks the rankings would be static doesn't really know what they're talking about.

Be serious, please! IOI weren't active for a whole year! This is a ridiculous comparison. I was there, my friend, I'm here since the 1st gen of Kpop! I became a massive Sejeong and Chungha fan because of IOI, but you can't compare a couple of month success with actual and real Kpop groups. Like I said, EVERY survival show groups are popular in the beginning, especially if it's promoted by a big company like Mnet!
It's funny you're saying I was not there, then you proceed to say, people didn't know Chungha was from IOI.🤣
Just so you know, Chungha has the best digital stats in IOI after Somi, but unlike Somi, she had a longer period of success on Charts. And Somi only has like 2 or 3 songs that charted better after she signed with TBL, but last year, Chungha outcharted her Ice Cream madness. To be fair, it's not like TBL giving a lot of songs to Somi, she has like 2 Album and 1 Single in 7 years, so...
Like I said, Gugudan lasted for 4 years, did they outcharted any other 3rd gen group? No! Did WekiMeki with Yoojung outdid any 3rd gen group? No!
