I will start with Jennie, the latest one!
Above average album, with real versatility, but overall, I'm still disappointed!
First off:
The title track, 'like JENNIE' don't deserve to be the main one! It's basically just another Intro with the most basic lyrics. Sure, the beat goes hard, and it's going to be a big success on Tiktok, but that's all! Kinda shame I have to say this, but 'MANTRA' is a better song. If it's longer with better production, I'd love it, even with the cringe lyrics!
The rest of the album:
Why am I disappointed? Well, first off, maybe my sources were wrong, but I heard she's gonna have a self-written/composed Jazz song, but we didn't get that on 'RUBY'! So, that's my biggest disappointment! It's probably not her fault!
Excluding the intro (for obvious reasons), track: #2, #4, #6, #7, and #9 falls short, and even tho all of these had potential, I felt like, just half-baked songs!
The collab with Dua is the basic Pop song you can get. 'ExtraL' doesn't showcase Jennie, more like overshadows her. 'Mantra' is another Tiktok song, and 'ZEN', even tho it's probably her most experimental song on the album, it's still forgettable, especially without the MV!
The positives:
Track #3, #5, #8, #10, #11, #13, #14, #15 were strong enough to save her album from being another bland Blackpink solo! The fact that half of her album is good proves that Jennie has potential as a soloist!
'Start a War' and 'with the IE (way up)' is easily a much better Title Track contender!
'Starlight' could've been the best song, but the chorus ruined it!
Overall, Jennie showed that she has versatility, and since she left the YG cage, no one forcing her to sing out of her vocal range.
Out of the 4 members, Rose and Jennie are the only ones whom are actually tried to showcase their personalities, how they feel about their own music! At least, they're the only ones who made me feel this while listening to their albums!
Before I write my review I have to say one thing, because I know what's gonna happen if certain people will read it!
I HATE EDM!
Only a handful of artists can make me like this genre, and that's not Jisoo! So, here's my review!
Her EP in short: ALL VISUALS!
The positives:
Jisoo and her PR team knows what she can do, hence the full-on EDM album, so she doesn't have to sing beyond her range! Her English pronunciation is better than I thought it would be! Well done!
The rest:
Earthquake is the most basic blockbuster type of MV you'll ever see, but her visuals are on point as usual. The song itself couldn't be more irritating and below-average, even compared to other EDMs! The so called "Dance Choreo" couldn't be easier, but then again, it's not her forte, so I'm not surprised.
Now, let's see the other songs. "Your Love" is the best on the album, but that's not really a compliment! Production wise, it's just another typical EDM with the same beat, but her voice actually sounds nice, because her team used pitch correction well, so she doesn't sound like a whale!
The rest of the album is just average!
I'm not surprised one bit that Jisoo released an EP like this, she knows her fans will love everything she does, BUT don't tell me she cares about her music career, because she doesn't! No one who cares releases the most basic EDM album without doing a proper vocal training and learn a bit harder choreo!
To be honest, I can't blame her! In this day an age, popular artists don't have to do much to stay relevant!
In short: Too much ego in one album!
The positives:
'Born Again', 'Moonlit Floor', 'New Woman', 'When I'm With You', and 'Dream' saved her album from being a massive failure! The fact that out of these 5 songs, 3 are a collab, says everything!
The negatives:
'Alterego' is "The Wattpad album of the Year", and the real musicians saved her album! I'll give props for trying, but ultimately, she failed to deliver! Not only as a singer, but as a rapper, as well, not to mention songwriter. Every featured artist outshined her, as professionals do with rookies!
The lyrics:
Reading the lyrics of her songs, is pretty much an insult to songwriters! Almost every song on her album is about: money, popularity, and trying to convince people that she's the best! Lines like this:
"They want the old LISA, then listen to my old shit"
Proves there's a LONG way for her to become a real artist! Before this album, she had 2 songs, but it's not like we have to go back to her YG songs, because most of her album sounds exactly the same, with the same cringe lyrics!
Again, I'll give props for trying out different genres, but for the next album, she has to learn to sing, and rap properly! Writing about how nice it is to be a millionaire and popular it's okay once or twice, but making a whole album about it, is just being lazy!
No one can build a real career on this!
Rose
The most balanced and best Blackpink solo album, but probably the only member who didn't take any real risk!
I liked her album the most, but only because her style of music is much closer to my taste!
I don't have a longer review about her album, because she released it basically on the same day when I lost my family member, so I never a real chance to care about her album that much.
It's a decent album overall, but not outstanding.
