"number one girl" is a message for the toxic, fake fans | why toxic fans are worse than antis

I'm going to make sure people understand this. For artists, especially in K-pop, it's not their antis that are the most toxic. Sometimes it be their own fandoms.

Toxic BLINKS drove BLACKPINK to the brink of disbandment, always pitching the girls against each other and projecting their own selfish motives onto the girls. Thankfully, Rosé, Jennie, Lisa, and Jisoo stayed strong despite all that.

They didn't value these girls while they were active as a group. They only used them as pawns for their agenda against other groups and fandoms. Arguably even worse than that, the akgaes weaponized their bias member against the other members.

I hope these toxic "fans" really listen to what Rosé sang about and be much more supportive of the members individually and collectively. I feel like the message is being misunderstood because people think it's a song about wanting to be someone's love interest, but it's not. It's more than that.

It's about wishing to be accepted by her own fans. It's really sad when you think about it, and I just want people to know this.

I just think akgaes' words have the potential to affect a group even more than antis' do. When you're looking at fan accounts expecting to see praise, but you see hate about yourself, that's going to take a toll.

I don't think idols actively seek to find hate comments about themselves. I think they accidentally stumble upon them when looking for what their fandom is saying about them.

They already know hate is hate, so antis' hate is nothing new to them. But when it comes from people who identify as the fandom, they're going to internalize it.

Take RIIZE's Seunghan. The hate from his group's own fans was what hurt the most.

I think it started with the Jennie favoritism allegations. That caused the initial rift within the fandom. As time went on and the other members got their spotlight, it emboldened akgaes to start bragging to each other and to OT4 BLINKS.

I think the scarcity mindset, the “there can only be one #1” mindset, is ultimately what causes the most toxicity among K-pop fans regardless of what fandom they identify themselves as.

My thread was inspired by this article. I feel like a lot of the worst comments come from akgaes. When it comes to hate towards Blackpink, at least they get the blunt of it as a group. It’s awful when she gets singled out.

Thanks for backing me up on this. I brought up this topic because I think it’s important to start a dialogue about a very real issue in stan culture. It’s not meant to be a hot take.

The akgae problem unfortunately feels normalized in some spaces, but it should be called out for the sake of the fandom and the members.

I should have included that Billboard article in the OP. It seems like people think I’m just speculating the backstory to this song, but Rosé actually confirmed it herself.
