Wonyoungism

  • Wonyoungism is a mindset and lifestyle based on the habits, advice, and beliefs of Jang Wonyoung. It encompasses self-care, style, attitude, and more. I've known about this for a while now, but never really talked about it here.

I think it's really interesting. You might not find all of it relatable or relevant to you, but there are certain things you can take away from it! Kataphract and I talked about it before.

Ultimately, I think it's just a cool way to motivate yourself to keep showing up for yourself. It's romanticization, but there's nothing wrong with that.

Contrary to what some may think, it's not toxic or unhealthy if you do it the right way. Take it nice and easy. Start by accepting yourself and working within first. Inner work is the foundation. Be kind to yourself and be happy with yourself. Focusing on external factors might make matters worse unless you've learned to love yourself within. The idea is to invest in your current self so that your future self will thank you.

  • I'm actually not sure why I made this thread... ^^ Aside from the fact that Wonyoungism came up in my YouTube recommendations again. I guess I just wanted to bring it up because it's interesting to me. It's late at night and I'm just rambling, really.

  • It's all about not being chronically online and spend time in healthy habits and investing in yourself. Which is something nice.

Taking it too extreme would be bad like any other thing tho.

  • Why not... both!

  • If I were a teen, I would be all about this too.

However, I do think it is important to give caution alongside. Striving for health, fitness, beauty, poise and being ambitious, are all great, but can lead to insecurities and burnout. And in case of Wonyoungism, it is sometimes misused as the new "pro-ana".

I was similar as a teen, the aesthetics just had different names. It can be a great time in your life but you can also toe some dangerous lines.

I don't want to spoil any fun but just give caution to always check in with yourself, how you're doing mentally and physically.

  • I try to follow Wonyoungism too haha

I dont like skincare too much tho bc as a teen literally nothing works

But it helps me work on my studies and stay in shape, Rn now I'm busy losing weight and lost 3kg so far and Wonyoungism helped me

I agree. I think it's important to focus on not only the physical, outward components, but more importantly the internal thoughts, mindset, and mental health.

People should do things at their own pace, never compare themselves to anyone else, and be kind to themselves.

Overall, I think Wonyoungism can be a good thing for people who may need a bit of inspiration to get things started. A bit of romanticization isn't that bad; I think it can give us joy and sense of purpose in life. Not everyone cares about that, but I understand it.

  • I don’t think enough people realize that - in moderation - romanticization can be a powerful motivator!!

It really works! Different people do things differently. I find that if people want to see their lives in a more "artistic" light, they should use romanticization in a way that helps them. As long as it doesn't lead to unhealthy delusions, it's perfectly fine.

Fully agree. Namjooning is a thing that inspires people to go hiking and read outdoors, that's another example.

Make a Pinterest vision board, pretend to live like one of them, create playlists to fit the vibe, it can all be in good fun and help with self-improvement.

Edit: actually now I also want to make Pinterest boards and playlists and live "demure and mindful"... Am I being cringe? I'll stop here before I get too carried away.

Retinol works, my sis put me on it at 16 and now I can't imagine living w/o it, granted it's not a necessity but it'll change your life promise. That along with Korean rice masks and the Ordinary serums will do you wonders

Can I take retinol at 15 tho? And which brand would you recommend?

I dont really have severe acne or something like that but I've been breaking out a lot lately

Would recommend getting a retinol under dermatologist prescription only, one because you're too young and don't have SEVERE acne. Two because each retinol type has different strengths and properties depending on what your skin needs are (varies in efficacy/use). With first use it also does cause your skin to break out fully in most cases (which is kinda expected but really freaks you out of youre not warned about it) then it gets better. So better to use it under appropriate dermatologist care.
