I used to think there was like some fixed number of years, but there really does not seem to be any? I think it's really based on whenever big companies release their main BGs and GGs. Like Girls Generation/TVXQ, Red Velvet/EXO, Aespa/NCT(?), and RIIZE/ whatever GG SM is about debut.

K-netz started the trend of calling them by 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. gen and i-fans just kind of followed along and went with it.

People have been saying 5th gen is starting since Zebraseone/Kiss of Life/Baemon/RIIZE debuted. So, guess that's where we are now.
