What the hell is YG doing with Babymonster?

  • I'm sorry, but is anyone else questioning the strategy or lack thereof from YG?

Their approach with debuting and promoting Babymonster has been utter chaos.

First, the entire mess that was the Ahyeon situation with Ahyeon was so poorly explained and even more poorly handled.

I don't know what actually happened behind the scenes, but in hindsight, they should've sorted everything out and just delayed their debut, although who knows if it ultimately would've mattered with the clowns running that circus.

Speaking of, their debut would've been okay...in 2013. In 2023, with the amazing creativity we see from girl groups these days, a year that was literally the most Korea has ever listened to girl group music, they released a song that felt dated and fell flat in Korea.

And I don't think their latest release is a great start to 2024. We're two releases in and I still don't know who Babymonster are. Not their concept, their sound or the vision of the team behind him. It's like they're playing darts blindfolded and hoping to land a bullseye.

Which is a shame. Because I think Babymonster themselves are easily the most talented group of girls that YG has ever debuted.

If this keeps up, it'll be safe to say YG is even more out of touch than JYP, which would be impressive honestly.

All right, I'm off to short YG stock

  • YG did not have strategy with Blackpink either, they just copied Bigbang's MADE release window in 2016. Their career "planning" was bizarre until Interscope took over in 2019

YGE don't know how to idol bussines work. I have repeat this since 2016. It was true back them, it's true now

They always sold themselves as outsiders in kpop sphere, as the agency who releases artists instead of idols. However their bussines model focused on artists instead of idols is not enough to make their core bussines profitable, even more so after 80% of their host of both soloists and groups not resigning after 2017

Now they need to go to idol bussines and they are simply clueless...

  • YG is still stuck in 2010 when music like this was okay to release. They cannot keep up with the change in the kpop industry. Nowadays, groups need their own unique identity, with their own unique concept, and their own unique sound to make it big. That's why New Jeans is so popular. YG didn't even contribute anything to their past GG's, the reason they were so big was because of Teddy.

Now that they don't have him on call anymore, they have to try to make their own group by themselves with producers who seem stuck in 2010 as well. YG cannot evolve with the industry, they evolve at their own slow pace. Even with Ahyeon added back, they are not magically going to start being popular since their music is lifeless and lacking in anything unique. Sure they are all talented but talent doesn't equate to hit songs and popularity.

Needless to say they have the worst creative team, and once their album drops I don't expect anything but music I haven't heard before.

  • I think he might be just bypassing Korea for promotions, as it is just irrelevant in the big picture.

They are already #4 in 4th and 5th gen girl groups:

Baby Monster, Batter Up - 1,320,577 streams peak

Super Lady - 1,115,070 streams peak

    Baddie - 987,194 streams peak

They could even rise up to #2 after their album hits.

The marketing now is totally different. They are targeting tweens and early teen girls globally. So YouTube, tiktok, twitter and whatever tweens use now. I assume the music they like is Disney High School Musical, similar to NJs, but I don't really know.

  • 1.3M streams yet couldn't enter Spotify global. Botted streams.

  • Kind of obvious they took the bp 2.0 criticism and decided to go the opposite way. The song isn't going to create huge buzz but it's decent. At least there's potential to promote the girls as a vocal group.

  • Their first release did some numbers on Spotify riding on the coattails of being Blackpink’s junior internationally but it’s not likely to keep up if they can’t forge a more concrete identity.

YG as a company has nothing going for them lol.

They have an international fanbase from their YouTube "elimination" series. If it was just people checking them out only just because they are BP's juniors, their streams would have collapsed after a couple of days. The day 19 number imo is indicative of their fanbase size... its bigger than ive's international fanbase, and most likely gidle's.
