Well isn't it based on if they make a big enough impact and if a bunch of other groups are influenced by their image. So we have to wait to see what other groups debut after them and if they are similar or not
ZB1 & BABYMONSTER : 4th or 5th generation ?

they are 4th gen

does anyone feel the shift in generation is not by years but how kpop is consumed? imo
1st gen is obvious
2nd gen japan
3rd gen youtube/twitter
4th gen spotify/tik tok
until a different means to consume kpop changes the shift might be a while

Aespa, mave and fe:verse are 5th gen because they use vr as their media

4th gen has just began, not to mention how many 4th gen groups have become very popular, and have yet to reach full potential. This generation awaits more groups, so I think I would consider Baby monster 4th gen.

Only about 6 or 7 2nd gen groups were popular in Japan, that makes no sense
Also, Spotify is not going anywhere. If you want it to be replaced before a 5th gen starts prepare yourself to wait for 20 years

4th gen. From 2018 to present.

4th gen haven't even over taken 3rd generation at the top much less for 5th gen to start. Any company that tries to claim their group is "5th gen" right now needs to be laughed at out the room because it's obvious they are only looking to earn bragging points and are arrogant enough to try and skip over their peer competion to claim false titles of success instead of directly competing.
5th gen will start when the top groups of the 4th gen start losing their trendiness and start phasing out, allowing newer up coming groups to start taking over. Their fanbase will also be mainly made up of the youngest Gen Z and all of Gen Alpha. There must also be a noticeable curtural shift with how Kpop groups produce music and content.
The issue with some people is that they keep looking at generations as simple dates on a calender instead of an entire era defined by group of people during that time.

That's exactly what they did with 4th gen and worked
Mind you 3rd gen was FAR from losing any trendness in 2018 even older groups like EXO, Got7 ane Red Velvet were having their all time peaks let alone newer groups lol. If anything, 3rd gen "trendness" start drying in 2020 and only really completely lost it steam last year
3rd gen and 4th gen mostly coexisted and I'm yet to see any 4th gen group being able to beat Blackpink and BTS, or even Twice and Seventeen although everybody is perfectly comfortable calling every group debuted in the last 5 years as 4th gen
Now 5th gen groups somehow need to expect 4th gen groups to disband to come to existence lol, if that's the case you can wait 4th gen to last at least more 5 years

5th gen is way too soon and a marketing stunt BUT if it means not having yet another fandom fighting about 4th Gen titles, I'm in
