Discrediting a serious disease and making fun of the guidelines, which helped the virus spread faster is the government's fault. And I think OP is talking about the pandemic, not the origin of the virus.

I agree, the spread of the disease is the government's fault. But the disease itself is no-one's fault (particularly since "it's China's fault" has been a meme among the right-wing US). I was responding to that. Sorry if there was confusion!

China. Suppressing those that found the virus, lying about the existence of the virus and no one outside being made aware until it was too late directly led to this current pandemic. We've seen lots of pandemics in recent years (SARS, MERS, ebola etc) and countries had taken the necessary steps to contain them but what China did was grossly immoral and dangerous.

here were two real approaches to this: Taiwan, Vietnam, and SK approach which means an intelligent coordination between government and industries or the hard pill China took after finally recognizing how big the problem is when they tried to hide it. The intelligent approach isn't fool proof as we saw in SK where idiots who didn't follow guidelines fucked it.

First signs of coronavirus were around October/November if you followed East Asian news. Sadly Western news didn't give much attention due to impeachment, trade wars, Brexit, HK riots, and other shit news relevant to each country. Media/social media is such in a joke state, so I put a huge blame on them.

Still at January countries should have started acting like Taiwan, HK, and Vietnam were acting. China closing down was a huge flag to start acting. SK and Iran were a follow up sign. And finally Italy happened. Yet Western governments save a few were looking at them like it's not their problem. Almost every single country at Western sphere failed to act. WHO being politicized didn't help as well. Specialists already alerted that the virus probably spread outside China when they tried timidly enact some measures. Governments just didn't listen .

Also, in the USA, people politicize stuff that doesn't need to be politicized. Dealing with it should be a bipartisan issue. Anti-science crowd also is to blame and sadly lot of them were at power beside money interest panderers.

Sincerely most governments ignored this type of threat for so long. SARS, MERS, and so on happened before and gave us early warnings.
