When will Kpop be respected like Korean/Asian films?

  • Korean/Asian films are sweeping prestigious awards and praised for their artistic values meanwhile Kpop is never taken seriously and Kpop idols are not respected even though they make lots of money. Why and how can Kpop be taken more seriously?

  • i think it's because kpop is centered on visuals. there are some hypocritical people out there who say that they have visuals and no talent, and those people are usually the most ignorant people. they don't understand the work that idols have to do to debut and how much they have to risk. those people are the people who say "don't judge a book by its cover" while quickly walking away from any city that has any people who are minorities

  • western art critics don't like pretty things

Whether it's the style of the painting, story line of a movie or the music

They put higher value in darker and messier styles

    Kpop is opposite of that

But should we look at kpop as any less bc it doenst fit the narrative of western art critics? Why is their opinion or taste in art so superior than their contemporaries from other cultures?

I don't think sth is necessarily superior just bc it is recognized by a narrow set of art culture values.

  • All the delusional Kpop fans should stop blaming the west when kpop isn’t even respected in South Korea, the home of kpop. South Koreans have already spoken many times about why kpop isn’t respected and yet kpop fans keep lying to themselves.

  • The very nature of Kpop being "pop" music, and more explicitly, manufactured, by committee/corporation pop means it will never be held in as high regard as prestigious film

This style of pop is never taken all that seriously, regardless of its country of origin.

It's literally the same with movies

They have giant corporate machines behind them

It's not like indie Asian films are what that makes wave

  • It’s in the name : kpop. Pop music. Pop music is just that, popular music. It’s not going to be taken as some sort of artistic endeavour that critics will cum their pants over. At best it'll be praised as a fun to listen to and that's about it.

Comic movies are the outright biggest, most popular and most influential movies for the last decade but 99% of them are just seen as mindless fun by reviewers and will never be taken seriously by critics. The funny thing is comics/movies inherently can have more morals for kids than real life, Captain America embodies more of the so called American spirit than the like of Donald trump and half the country following him lol.

Video games are easily the biggest form of entertainment by both revenue and fan engagement (a person can play a the same game for hours straight with new content, can’t the same about a movie or song) and continually keep pushing new boundaries of interaction and technology no other form of entertainment can ever match but as a whole they’re taken as not much more than (grown) kids entertainment by many.

At the end of the day I don’t think it matter what some critics have to say, if you enjoy it then power to you.

I think we kind of agree here

The best movie style equivalent to kpop would be more or less mass produced, masses pleasing movies.

Your Marvel/DC superhero stuff. Your Dreamworks sameface animations.

Movies with big giant corporate machines that churn out people pleasing, bright colored, flashy, forgettable fun that most people forget soon after.

They are designed for big profit and big numbers, not respect. Same with kpop

Another way I'd look at it is kpop is very much musical "fast food", not musical "fine dining"

  • Kpop is boyband music sung in Korglish. How respected were Backstreet Boyz, NSync, or New Kids on the Block? I remember the exact same insults being hurled at them that are being hurled at Kpop bands currently. Dont let nostalgia cloud your memory, everyone made fun of them, saying they're manufactured pretty boys with zero talent, only suitable for young hormonal teen girls, blah blah blah, the exact same shade you see leveled at BTS, BP, etc etc.

  • When they release lyrically good music in english. Also, the American music industry has always been super corrupt and award shows are part of that.
