Would you like kpop the same if the songs were in English?

  • Do you think that would increase or decrease your enjoyment? Would it matter?

Honestly, for me, the language is part of the appeal. I love the way Korean sounds and wish I could learn it. Also, I'm kinda glad that I don't understand the lyrics since so many pop songs have terrible lyrics anyway.

    Wby?

  • It depends. For the most part, I love the Korean lyrics and have no problem with the songs as is - even with my very little understanding of Korean. I don’t mind reading the translations and learning the lyrics.

I tend to dislike sloppy ‘translated’ or adapted versions for a particular market - e.g., all the terrible Jpn versions because the lyrics don’t flow well or are not the best. There are a few that are acceptable, but I would I always listen to the original in Korean. For English versions - the same applies.

Which is why I really appreciate original Jpn or English songs by Korean musicians - they took the time and made it as it is for whatever reasons. People here tend to hate Dynamite, Butter, and Permission to Dance but I think they are all fine and resonated with many ppl. around the world. I’ve seen ppl that enjoy the songs without knowing it is by BTS or a KPOP group even.

True. I would rather not understand the lyrics that understand terrible and non-sensical translations. We've all heard awful English lyrics.

  • depends on what I listened to first - first impressions count

like if it was in English then maybe the Korean version would be strange or vice versa or even songs in Japanese for example

  • So the appeal has nothing to do with the lyrics for you. That's fair. Kpop has so many entertaining aspects.

Like for example the feels by twice or what is love by twice are both light songs by them I equally enjoy. But they’re both very kpop. And that’s what I like.

But like on the ground or gone by Rose. I can’t be bothered to listen to it because songs like those are dime a dozen by American Artists.

Its not so much the lyrics as it is the kpop sound that matters to me.
