If this turned out differently, I think Sakura may have never remained a K-pop idol

This video announced her in third place (the top two went against each other and Jurina won) it was a big upset because she was predicted to finish 1st or 2nd.

The moment when she lost in the 2018 senbatsu election to Jurina. She was heartbroken after losing and kept saying this was her last biggest chance to win. After this, PD48 happened, Jurina of SKE48 (the winner) actually dropped out.

I don’t think Sakura would have had that drive to become a K-pop idol if she didn’t lose like this.

  • I don't understand why she's so sad to get third place. What did she lose?

well 1st place lol.. :pepe-cringe: i think it was a matter of pride thing more than any monetary prize. The whole akb system was very competitive and cut throat, there have been instances of inner bullying going on between some members from other units, so it makes sense that winning 1st place among so many idols (like around 200 i think?) is a great sense of pride for them. Pd101 ain’t nothing compared to the kind of pressure that akb’s environment enveloped

It’s the AKB senbatsu election to determine the center, it’s generally a huge thing for 48 girls. During that year, the entire race was SKE48 Matsui Jurina vs HKT48 Miyawaki Sakura.

The girls have a huge responsibility to themselves and their representative group to win. The top 2 that year was SKE48 Jurina which was expected but also SKE48’s Suda Akari which was not expected.

Not only knocking out Sakura at third but this made this a guaranteed win either way for SKE48, hence all the celebrating between Jurina and Akari.

It was a huge deal basically and kind of an embarrassment/upset for Sakura to not place at least 2nd for her fellow HKT members

Well, obviously, but I assumed it meant she got something bad or something! Like I vaguely know the AKB groups have the high tier and the lower tier versions, but you'd think someone popular enough to get 140K votes wouldn't be relegated to the low tier group.

I can see how such a cutthroat environment could make even what is, by pretty much any measure, a high indictment of her popularity seem not that good. It reminds me of a study I'd read that, in the Olympics, the happiest person is the person who won gold (duh) and the second happiest is the person who won bronze. Because third place guy is just happy he's on the podium, and second place guy is despairing because if he had been just a tiny bit better, he could have won gold.

Ah, that makes sense too. So you're winning not just for yourself, but for a whole group. That explains why the other two were so happy; I figured it was just because they got to be 1st or 2nd, but it's basically because their group wins no matter what.

What an odd dynamic. I bet their akgae problems are insane.

Yeah, in a way you are representing your group too so it’s a ton of pressure.

The AKB fandom is a mess lol and Whi was right that there are bullying and other kind of damaging behaviour due to how competitive and cut throat it all is.

  • had things turned out differently, she could've been an action star

I can see that. The comments on that tweet are so mean.

Well, their loss is our gain. :siptear: Sakura was my favorite in PD48.

  • Perhaps, but I don't think that the main reason.

    1. Before the election, she already said that 2018 Sousenkyo will d be her last participation.
    2. Produce48 already began filming when this election being held. So, unless she failed to get into IZ*ONE line up, she already destined to become K-Pop idol regardless of her senbatsu election result.

  • But who’s bigger now is the qns :sure-bee:
