The success of BP & D4 worldwide made companies realize that going for a cute concept isn't a very smart idea business-wise cause they aren't very popular in Korea OR WW & followers of that concept (usually older men) aren't very loyal and bring very little to the table profit-wise vs going with girl crush or whatever
Probably a big reason why groups like Weeekly ditched their image

I don`t agree in the part you say they are not very popular in Korea.
I think they are popular in Korea, but the groups that are having success world wide (more than asian market) are not cute concept.
Therefor companies prefer crush, cos they know they will get more money from international fans, than just aiming to korean public

I wasn't around for the height of the cute concepts but it would seem that groups that did non-cute concepts sold more and could attract a bigger audience...especially from non-traditional kpop fans
we are kpop fans since we're already use to cute/pure concepts may find it easier to consume whereas for a group to try to capture new fans it might be harder especially as kpop gets more global
