I think personal satisfaction of doing what you want is often dismissed but It really plays a big part on their longevity as artists

the top groups have always been able to sell more than non-top groups

the question for someone who has the information is are BG as a whole (or maybe let's say top 100 BG in terms of sales) vs top 100 GG in terms of sales whether those top 100 GG have on average started selling more as a % relative to previous years...

Boy groups offer attractive males, and a generally steadier touring/album revenue(I want to see how long the gg album boost lasts, it's unique after all.
