Why do K-pop Stan’s put so much weight on k-charts?

  • A group can be selling out stadiums selling 2mill per album chart well on billboard and spotify basically break tuns of record but once K-pop Stan’s see that the same group didn’t chart at least 10 on melon they are automatically flops.

People called Lisa flop for not charting well on melon same for twice and Itzy as well as tones of bgs but they are some of the people dominating the K-pop industry.

Like do k-charts really matter that much?

  • But is it really more important.

Domestic success can only get you so far.

I think it depends on the artist. If the artists main market is domestic, it would be impt for them. If the artists main market is intl, intl success is prob impt for them.

As for fans who hyper focus only on k charts, maybe bcos that’s where their faves mainly perform well or really it’s probably just one of their interests…idk..

  • I pay more attention to Kcharts because most of the time that is where idols can feel the popularity and impact of their song the most. Also, it is more realistic to become an A-tier artist in Korea than in other countries.

Most groups only chart at the extreme low end of the charts in other countries. for example, kpop groups chart around 150-200 on Spotify global so they are making little to no impact on that chart but in Korea lot of groups have placed in their songs Top 10. It still depends on what you prefer. Would you rather be A-B tier in Korea (charting top 10 or Top 5) or D tier and below in other countries (charting 150 and below in other countries)?

Also, when a group has a popular song in Korea they can feel the impact by having people around them sing the song, being played in cafes and radio stations around the country. They can feel their popularity in real time by being invited to shows and tv stations, members become more popular and they can get CFs, solo work from dramas, and the likes. Most of the time Kpop groups getting popular outside korea means bits and bits of popularity from various countries so they might not get opportunities like in Korea.

Some groups might not chart in Korea but they make more money than those that chart in Korea. So you can still be successful if you don't appear on the Kcharts.

  • This. If you do good on k-charts you can become a much more popular group on the country or at least in the local market, which can benefit you directly let it be with album sales, CFs or touring power on Asia. If you do good on let's say Spotify (for K-Pop standards) that's good because it means international k-pop fans know your music within the K-pop context, but it doesn't neccesarily translate to more important benefits. Western fans are not as loyal to a group usually.

Exactly. Doing good internationally is just in the Kpop sphere while in Korea it will be more than that. Also, a lot of groups have that one member that only became a kpop idol to cross over to acting, being in a popular group in Korea will help with their goals too.

  • Popularity in their home country helps not just the group but also the individual members when they have to consider their careers in the future outside of just kpop. If they have both national and international success then that's ideal.

  • I don’t think I ever said it’s weird to pay attention to k-charts just that when I group doesn’t do well on them there automatically labeled as flops.

Honestly, personal opinion, anyone who labels idol groups as flops for not charting good here or there have no idea how the industry works. A group can have 200k streams on a song and not enter on the top 1000 of Melon, Spotify and have 500k views on Youtube, yet if they sell enough albums or have decent touring they are doing fine.
