Smaller groups are just easier honestly
It's a good number, easier to know all the members and they show individuality. Tbh, I think it's hard to companies to make the members stand out in their own way and don't make some of them look like backup dancers, SNSD and Twice did it well. I'm not naming them just because they're famous, but look at Twice earlier years, JYPE made different sets and style of clothes for the members in the mvs (in LOA you would see Sana as the clumsy, Nayeon as refreshing and fruity, Momo as the hot dancer, Mina as the elegant...), so it was easier to be interested in the group.

just because in 1st gen group with 6 members was big, and kind of group with 3 people was a standard
it was the same with bg's they grew much more in terms of member numbers in 2nd gen mostly thanks to SuJu
but like I said 2nd gen gg's already had Girls Generation, and After School,
Was there even a First Generation girl group with six members? The largest group I can think of only had five.
