When people discuss 2nd gen leaders, many group, that had really good digitals, are not named. Looks like top groups require something else in addition to good digitals

Define mid-tier. Their digitals in Korea and Spotify streams are among the best out of all 4th gen groups (top 5 in both I think, both gg and bg). Soyeon and Yuqi are two of the most well know 4th gen idols in Korea and they have a big enough fandom that they're soon about to go on a world tour(/America+Asia).
Their sales aren't the best but both of their last two albums sold over 200k. It's not great but it's not that bad.

They would fall behind aespa easily in Spotify streams. Their sales are no where near the top like itzy, aespa, ive. Overall they don't have top numbers imo

pretty sure two of their previous singles are still in the top 10 overall gaon points for 4th gen. And Tomboy's going to unquestionably kick its way up in to the top 3.

Gidle is the only 4th gen groups with five songs with over 50 mil streams on melon. When Tomboy reaches 100+ mil they’ll be the only group to have two songs to reach the milestone. And Tomboy has a chance to become the biggest 4th gen song overall, if you gonna exclude it you’d better exclude NL and DD too. (which makes Itzy and Aespa’s digitals just as “mid”, if not worse)
Their spotify streams might not be as good as Itzy/Ive but even excluding K/DA they’d be in the top 5 for 4th gen girl groups. I mean last year they were the second most streamed 4th gen gg overall and K/DA didn’t release anything in 2021, so it was mostly their own songs getting them those numbers.
So unless their mid sales are a dealbreaker for you they’d still count as a top group

Not melon streams....
One song doesn't earse the performance of rest. Itzy is extremely mid to flop in Korea just like gidle. Savage eats up every gidle song not named tomboy. Black mamba a flop is bigger than gidle flops. Dreams come true performed similar to gidle titles being a station song. Let's not forget aespa has what close to 40 weeks t10 on melon debuting in 2020 while gidle not even half in 4 years cmiiw. Ive has more and they debuted dec 2021
Top5 don't mean impressive. Just less top tier competition. They also have a bigger discography

tbh everyone was saying gidle was gonna be 4th gen leaders but then all of the drama threw them off and everyone forgot how loved gidle was. now, people are refusing to acknowledge them and their success now that tons of girl groups have debut and proven themselves as 4th gen leader "worthy". there are tons of other great, successful girl groups but i wish kpop stans didn't have short-term memory loss and switch sides as soon as they see another group doing well and start acting like gidle flopped hard when in reality they're doing great for a 4th gen group.
edit: people saying they're not 4th gen, idk what you count 4th gen but if ateez and stray kids are 4th gen, then gidle is very much 4th gen

tbh i don't remember because i was never into music wins or whatever, and soley liked them for their music/personalities. but i do remember everyone saying gidle was the 4th gen girl group. its hypocritical to take back your words and act like it was never said, because it was mentioned so often. im not saying gidle is the best, im saying stop acting like gidle was never a contender. they got thrown off because of the scandal, and they will have their own achievements within their due time.

Their first 2/3 years yes but now they reach their prime but in the last 2 and a half year it's 2 albums. And they barely have anything when they don't release an album. 1 Soyeon solo and a Last Dance. Itzy/Aespa/Ive are very active and already peaked sale wise as good or better than gidle. Their charting are impressive but because of the hiatus since they became charting monsters they don't stay at the top. It's big release, wait a lot, big release. They do not have the power of Blinks to create enormous hype before the song come out too.
3rd gen top girl group did not release that many songs either, you know
Literally the only group in kpop history that manages to dominate with long hiatus + Twice dominated most of the beginning of 3rd gen, which is timeline wise more fitting to the landscape of current 4th gen.
