If you are actually curious and want a good summary, I'd watch this (there may be a video before it and it has a part 2):

It's definitely a video in favor of MHJ, but it at least acknowledges and tries to counter most of the arguments I've seen from the anti-MHJ/pro-HYBE crowd. Credit to Yama-Chan for posting it.

Personally I think it's still hard to choose 1 side. To me it seems like the 2 extreme sides are:

People in support of HYBE and against NewJeans or MHJ or both. This crowd believes MHJ is just a crazy jealous woman and her motivations are completely self serving. She is manipulating the NJs members and parents into doing her bidding. She started this whole thing and then dragged other groups into it, who have suffered greatly. Started mass fanwars. All for her own selfish reasons. And she just keeps continuing on and on trying to win injunctions/lawsuits she has no chance of ever winning. I think the fact that she's been viewed as a problematic figure even before this does not help. There's also the even more extreme that are trashing NJs and calling them spoiled brats.

People who support MHJ and Newjeans. My simplistic view is that they just see MHJ as a hard working innovator going up against the big evil corporation HYBE because she dared to challenge their conveyor belt style kpop production by filing an internal complaint about Illit. She dared to view and treat her artists like people, instead of a product, which is how HYBE views it. And this could've remained an internal issue, but it was HYBE who brought it to the forefront under the guise of an audit into MHJ that should've never happened. It was HYBE who forced MHJ's hand in publicly mentioning other groups. And then we all know the craziness that followed.

There's just so much too it like not even bringing up SA case, leaked texts, leaked videos of trainees, utlimatums, etc. So much craziness!!! But thats my simplistic interpretation of what I see.

Well, I have my idea of what a parasocial relationship is, but let's consult google: A parasocial relationship is a one-sided emotional connection that a person develops with a media figure they don't know in real life

I would say going by that definition, most of us here are in a parasocial relationship with the groups we follow. I suppose it's all about how far you take it because at a point it does become an unhealthy obsession. As long as you have a good amount of self awareness, there's nothing wrong with parasocial relationships I guess. Like I know I'll never actually get to marry Jennie or Karina, but one can hope.

Ah okay. Very cool to see "Maniac" popped off despite releasing in early November 2023. Didn't like "Event Horizon" so much.

I forgot I pulled this data in the beginning of September, so 2024 is off smh. Really the only difference is APT at #5 and sadly poor VIVIZ was pushed out of the top 10.

And a Billie Ellish song? Surprising that she would be the one western act there, but maybe it was that big of a hit.

Also Anne Marie for 2002 as I mentioned. She was actually #1 on the circle chart that year.

Tru-Multistan BABYMONSTER is in this category!

    they won it!

It's okay my thread also flop here.

Is this YTM or just vanilla YT (or a combination)?

The weekly song chart combines YTM + Official MV + Unofficial videos with the song, this would be stuff like Lyrics videos and Reactions videos (assuming they credit the song, you'd see in the videos description section). Which I actually like because I think those things should count towards a view. From what I can see, music shows and such don't seem to credit the song, so I don't think they are included.

can u please inform her its Kpop, as in Korean pop, but not North Korea. South Korea that did amazing Kdramas that she must've watched at one point.

Or at least that how I got my mom hooked. She's Army now and counts down to the days each member has left to serve. I guess I got the obsession from her. :finger-heart:

May have to give it a try, though it'd be unfortunate if she got sucked into stan twitter lol

Artist is a pretty general term but I do think their is at least a somewhat agreed upon definition in music. This is from google: A music artist is a person who creates, performs, and produces music as a form of artistic expression.

By that definition, can we call all idols artists? No, though they don't all get the opportunity to produce their own music and some may just not want to. But I prefer to think of it in the general sense or by this other definition from google: a person skilled at a particular task or occupation. In that sense I would say all idols are artists. I even consider the work that I do to be "art" in a sense.

Basically to me an artist is someone who is both creative and a hard worker. Someone who is conscientious of the work they do, knows where they need to improve if any, and works hard each day to do so. And overall they deeply care about whatever it is they are producing. Whether that be through more traditional "arts" like painting or music, or something like engineering, it is all art to me. The Idols I like most are the ones you can really feel this passion coming from.

Already saw clips of it on X. And I will watch the official performance of all the songs when JYPE uploads it.

Not many Onces left here so I didn't bother making a thread. I am also not as active as I used to be.

On a side note, this made me realize JYPE needs to send Twice to some festivals, not for the sake of exposure but cuz music events like these are a different experience from your usual concert. I honestly enjoyed this performance way more than a normal Twice concert.

Agreed, the Go Hard performance was one of my favorite.

am I the only Once that saw this???? It was so cool to see them in front of a Western audience like this. It was also streamed on a couple different platforms I think. I was really happy with the song choices.

now I can't stop using ChatGPT to answer stuff because of y'all:

The most toxic fandom on the allkpop forums is often cited as the Army fandom. While they are recognized for their immense passion and dedication to BTS, there are instances of toxic behavior from certain individuals within the group. This has led to negative perceptions among some users. However, it’s crucial to emphasize that these toxic behaviors do not represent the entire fandom; most Army members are positive and supportive. Every fandom typically consists of a diverse range of personalities, including both constructive voices and those prone to negativity. Therefore, it's essential to approach these discussions with a balanced perspective and recognize that generalizations may not accurately reflect the behavior of all fans.

I knew you would like 4minute!! And yes, you liked the songs I recommended!! Eheeeeee

And yes, 2ne1 and BB ballads are extraordinary. Tbh BP ballads are the weakest if compared to BB, 2ne1, Winner and iKon ones... Kkkk

I never properly thanked you, but thanks for the great suggestions! I realllyyyyyy like 4minute and Isastar suggested some other great songs from them as well. The group they remind me most of is Everglow who I also love. I agree 2NE1 ballads do hit a bit more than BP, though Happiest Girl is probably my favorite ballad of all time. I know very little bg music, perhaps I will do a bg deep dive one day. If you have any more suggestions please post if you have a chance, I'll get to them eventually lol.

I don't really have one absolute favorite, but one favorite song each from my favorite groups:

There were some good ones in here, thanks.

I have so many, I might need to make two separate posts

You have truly overwhelmed me with SM music, but now I have songs for days so I do appreciate your suggestions!! I got through a decent amount but I need a break lol. But it's been fun diving into SNSD, I need to check out more from Fx though. SNSD has quite a wide range of music but i seemed to enjoy their slower, melodic songs or those that are more upbeat with edm vibe, which tends to be my favorite types of songs. Their Japanese songs seem to hit nicely, though it's unfortunate some of their music is not on spotify.

All of my favorites were from Girls' Generation because they were the only group I listened to back then, believe it or not.

Thank you there were some in here I really enjoyed, especially Party, but I did not get through them all yet.

This is what I wrote down while listening, genuinely no songs that I would say are bad yet.

    • 2NE1 - Go Away - This song is actually already in my playlist, good song. The MV is really good, never seen something like it in kpop.
    • SNSD - Forever 1 - Appears to be 1 of their most recent releases, and possibly one of my favorite so far
    • Miss A - Lips - I love any EDM song for the most part so this was an easy one. The main chorus itself is a bit meh but everything around it is beautiful.
    • Miss A - Over U - Oh wow this is good
    • 4Minute - Canvas - the pre-chorus ahhh soo good. Omg I love it, chorus is decent and everything around it is great. The raps??? Borderline S Tier

    • SNSD - Complete - I thought this was gonna be a C but the harmonizing in the chorus saved it
    • F(x) - Red Light - Conflicted on this one but I will add it to my playlist for further review. I mostly like it but there were parts I didn’t enjoy.
    • Sistar - How Dare You - pretty good I like the synth sounds. Sistar is just a cool group
    • Crayon Pope - Dancing Queen 2.0 - I’m conflicted on this one, I do like it but not sure I’ll ever listen to it again. In the playlist it goes for further review.
    • Fx - Electric Shock - Fx music feels a lot like aespas music to me so far, at least for their title tracks.
    • 4Minute - Cold Rain - Some nice vocals, I just am weak slow vocal heavy songs, especially with piano. Where was this group being hidden all my life?
    • 4Minute - What’s your name - Probably my least favorite I’ve heard from them so far (only 4 songs), but still good enough. I like the pre-chorus
    • Miss A - Hush - Another borderline A tier song. Chorus was catchy and I like the guitar in it. It has a nice melody
    • Miss A - Touch - There’s nothing particular spectacular about this song but I enjoyed it enough, maybe it will grow on me. The sound feels different but also familiar.
    • Miss A - Madness - This group has some great songs. I love their vocals on this. Borderline A-tier
    • 4Minute - Funny - Decent, sound is a bit different from their prior songs I’ve heard so far. I’d guess this was an earlier song for them. Still a similar sound but more cutesy than their others.
    • SNSD - I got a boy - The MV was fun, the song is decent, it could grow on me.
    • SNSD - You Think - Enjoyed the MV and their vocals, not sure if I like the song much yet
    • SNSD - StarStarStar - just a decent song, kind of basic. But the vocals are nice, may listen to it again

    D Tier

It's really fun to see these older groups and how they have clearly inspired todays groups so much. But at the same time something about the 2nd gen just seems to hit different. Even though some of these songs aren't even that old, many just feel very different from the kpop of today. It's been a refreshing experience.
