Has 4th gen surpassed 3rd gen already?

  • Fourth generation is doing good, but they still haven’t surpassed 3rd generation top groups.

For boy groups, BTS, Seventeen, Exo, NCT units are still very prevalent and very much around. For girl groups, Twice, Blackpink, Red Velvet, and Mamamoo are still pretty dominant.

The 3rd generation top groups are still a lot bigger than 4th generation top groups in almost every area. Though, it’s not to say they will “never” surpass this generation, the night’s still young y’know?

Not mamamoo, they have fallen with both digitals and physical sales. 4th gen ggs did surpass them the past year/present

  • Here's an interesting data point. Third Generation artists have actually performed the worst in terms of music show wins this year:

    Fourth Generation – 37 wins (63.8%)

    Second Generation – 11 wins (19.0%)

    Third Generation – 10 wins (17.2%)

    TOTAL – 58 wins

  • well that's also because the 3rd gen groups are taking way more time to comeback so it's kinda logical the 4th one will have more wins overall

  • A lot of the third generation groups haven’t even made their comebacks yet. Also another thing to observe is whether it was an empty house or not as well.

  • No. 4th gen still having that 'The first 4th gen, the fastest 4th gen, etc...' narrative in all their achievements. And most of them only hype by their own fans. Try asking non kpop fans about them, how many know their songs like the 3rd gen songs or if they even know their existence. And it's really bias to try excluding the top groups in the 3rd gen and come up with this narrative. 3rd gen surpass the 2nd gen even their top groups and now you claiming this while they not surpass any of the 3rd gen top group's achievements?

That's because bts,as a top group, isn't limited to generations neither are they limited to kpop. They are currently the world's biggest group so it's only understandable that no one can come close. No kpop group is in their league. While, with other top 3rd gen groups we can already see that they're getting surpassed in some aspects

Even you erased bts in this conversation, still none of the 4th gen groups that known by the public. Gg only but just in Korea while bg just by their fans. Skz got no1 in bb200 but nobody really tuned in aside of their fans even Knetz didn't care. 4th gen sold million albums, but did gp know them? While the 3rd gen even in 2015-2016, were more known even for non kpop fans compare to 4th gen in their 4 or 5 years now. I accept if you say they start dominates the kpop league but to surpassed is a reach. Again, stop the narrative of 'the first 4th gen, the fastest 4th gen, etc.... blablablaa' first. 3rd gen create and unlock new achievements to surpassed 2nd gen and again what 4th gen have? The bg can't even chart that well in their own home country, how that possible.

  • No lol, as someone who's been very casual with kpop lately, I'm only aware of aespa, itzy and gidle (if you can really count the last two as 4th gen groups) and it's been, what, 2 years since this new gen kicked in? Compare it with 3rd gen's first two years and that should answer your question.

That honestly wouldn’t answer anything, because the times have changed. The era the fourth generation is debuting in is in a time where Kpop has grown tremendously globally, it’s absolutely not the same case scenario for 3rd generation.

I'd say Itzy is one of the major starting points of 4th gen.

Idle is a bit of a border case

Speaking of general public then no kpop act except bts,psy and blackpink are known. No first gen, second gen or fourth gen. There might be some exceptions in couple of Asian countries but even then, they aren't as well known among the general public as bts are now.

When we say that 4th gen are starting to dominate, I believe everyone knows we are talking about only kpop. Even generations are very kpop specific too

  • In my opinion no. 4th gen lacks HIT SONGS, literally. It's being years since the gen started and we still see this excuse here "they're still young, give them time", but what time exactly? How many groups of the 4th gen have a true hit? Not just a "kpop community hit" but a hit hit? (And a hit with so so numbers?...) Since 1st gen we had MULTIPLES groups having MULTIPLES HITS EVERY YEAR and 4th still fail hard in this part.. For a generation to dominate, they need to dominate every aspect. All gens passed through this, even excluding BTS, which 4th gen groups is surpassing BP internationally?? Even Twice is growing like crazy internationally!! Seventeen is a wall in Japan! NCT are doing crazy numbers too! All top groups of 3rd gen are still the groups dominating the criterias of "digital, physical, ww charting, yt views, streams, s.k. charting, cfs, overall popularity" everything. Even to this day it's 3rd gen groups that are mentioned alongside some kpop news.

4th are doing good, but they aren't dominating 3rd gen in any sense, maybe just the s.k. charting, but even here we have 3rd groups having the most digital points in the year end charts.
