(Philosophical Question) Do the Foreign members of Gidle have a Filial Duty to IU?

  • Do Song Yuqi, Ye Shuhua and Nicha Yontararak have a Filial Duty to the Senior SInger even though they are not Korean? 4

    1. No. They are not even the same nationality (1) 25%
    2. Yes. As long as they are in Korea they are subject to Filial Duty to the Senior Singer. (3) 75%

Gidle is one of the acts which did not cover IU's songs. The only member who covered any IU song who is with the group is MIyeon, but that could be excused since she is not from Cube to begin with.

Other than MIyeon, I found no references of current Gidle members mentioning the Senior Singer. Since their paths do not overlap it is unlikely that they will ever have anything to do with each other.

However, this time, Gidle's Tomboy, up to its most successful song, is blocked at Melon by Jay Park's Ganadara, whose only merit is that a portion of that song is sung by .... IU.

I don't think Jeon Soyeon and foreign members of GIdle, Song Yuqi, Ye Shuhua and Nicha Yontararak, expected they would have to pay filial duty to a person they were not supposed to deal with.

Before the eyes of Ms. Jeon, Ms. Song, Ms, Ye and Ms. Yontararak, the Senior Singer appears like a giant monster and roars and says she still owns Melon so Gidle should move away.

It appears she is forcing Filial Duty to non-Koreans this time, almost telling that even though they are not Koreans, since they are in Korean Pop for now they have to pay it to her, the Senior SInger.

That leads to a corollary; whether someone who debuted before her and collaborating (Jay Park this time) is subject to Filial Duty from newer singers as well, or is Filial Duty to a collaborator calculated separately.

This strange situation is a microcosm of KPop's story in the last 12 years, as a newer act, after a crisis, returns stronger than ever but is checked by the Singer who has frustrated quite a number of acts in the past and has no intention to slow down doing so.

  • ...What???? What is a 'filial duty'???

Filial duty is an ancient Asian custom in which children have to defer to their parents no matter how wrong the parents might be, and also they are supposed to provide for their parents no matter how bad the latte r might have behaved to them.

Eventually it was extended so younger generation had to defer to older generation in all cases.

As Confucianism got weaker the concept of filial duty got weaker as well, but in KPop there is a Senior Singer, IU, to whom everyone has to defer and she has abused such privilege quite often.

  • :pepe-back-away:

  • If the world was right and proper everyone no matter age, occupation or status should pay filial duty to IU, alas here we are in an unjust and cruel world

Technically those who debuted before her are not subject to it.

That aside SM and Mnet created this condition by giving her the Lifetime Achievement Award back in Dec 3, 2014, making her a Senior Singer.

Jay Park 2PM debuted few months before IU did, Ganadara MV was pretty much a tribute to her, whether you call it filial duty or not.

    Nothing succeeds like success.

She now has the combination of debut, success to have the dignitas that there aren't many who can NOT pay their respects.

I think that she is pretty much unbeholden to any company or group, also matters a lot.
