Painful missed opportunities in K-pop

  • What are some moments that were set to happen or that seemed like they should have happened, but didn't?

In 2016, Taeyeon was set to perform a beautiful rendition of "See You Again" with Wiz Khalifa at the MAMA Awards. They had done rehearsal and things seemed to go quite well. Taeyeon sounded great!

    Rehearsal footage:

Unfortunately, due to miscommunication, Taeyeon did not appear at the performance, leaving Wiz to perform the song by himself with Charlie Puth's vocals as the backing track.

While Wiz did a fantastic job and captivated the crowd's attention, we're still left to wonder what could have been. With Taeyeon's vocals and experience, this should have become one of the best MAMA performances of all time.

As somewhat of a mitigation, there's this fan-made video. I want to hear her perform this live one day. "See You Again" is by far one of the best western songs in recent years and she did it justice.

  • I love EXO's "KO KO BOP," but did you know it was originally meant to be a Red Velvet song? I can totally hear it and see it, especially Red Velvet is partially known for bright and summery concepts.

Joy's enthusiasm for this leaves me hopeful that they had some experience with the song and will cover it one day.

  • Wait, how does a miscommunication of that magnitude happen? I don't understand.

I don't understand either, but there are different variations of what went on. It's unclear what the reason actually was, and it was never fully resolved. I would just hope everyone's on good terms and that it was nothing more than misunderstanding and miscommunication.

  • these ;(

    czennie were robbed!!

Oh, like a interpersonal thing. I was like, "omg, did she get the time wrong? Miss as flight? Go to the wrong city?" lol

It was a fucking shitshow from Wiz Khalifa being an absolute cunt online.

    The main timeline was roughly

    - a couple days before wiz was supposed to fly in Korea and practice but he took long for whatever reason and arrived very late night/early morning. Taeyeon had gone to her hotel but wiz claimed she left him hanging initially then said she went hospital. Taeyeon was Instagram and at hotel, her posts confirmed it

    - day before everything went smooth

    - on the day wiz team had some technical fault on THEIR end. They didn't have a version of the song without vocals, just the one with Charlie Puth. Tae suggested singing over Charlie lines but that would obviously sound silly so Mnet cancelled Taeyeon part. Wiz performed as we saw

    - a few hours later wiz blames Tae outright saying she didn't want to perform with him and/or wanted to perform in a separate stage. Then Tae fans said Tae doesn't control her schedule, it's Mnet decisions (which we as kpop fans know how really works) but he implied she's not much of an artist then. He even spelt her name wrong and when corrected by fans he says "yeah whatever" showing no respect at all.

The timeline I said was later revealed by wiz DJ a few weeks later. He explicitly said it a technical problem and mnet was the one that cancelled. He says there was probably miscommunication which is understandable but that didn't explain why wiz blamed Tae for everything. Mnet meanwhile kept quiet the whole time letting Tae take the full blame.

  • Another one...

"1, 2, 3!" was supposed to be Rosé's song, but YGE thought it suited a male voice more. Now we're left with a bop that's tainted by He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.

  • OOOh so, there was a technical issue and Mnet cancelled. Seems stupid that Mnet wouldn't have clarified that publicly with a statement.

Yeah that is the gist. Tae was simply caught in things she had no control over while wiz was a dick and mnet were cowards.

The pathetic thing was the DJ posted parts of the Collab (in op) and he said he was really impressed and wanted to release it in some way. But bashing Tae fans weren't having it and told him to keep it.

  • harambelives

wait, if they didn't have music without Puth, what were they using in the rehearsa footage that Superyeah posted?

That was practiced the day before. The technical fault happened on the day but we don't know exactly when, might've been very short notice since they didn't manage to find a solution (couldn't they just download or transfer instrument version?).

tbh, i have a really hard time believing that a huge award show wouldn't have had that music set up already, especially considering they had a rehearsal the day before. Like do we really believe that MAMA is run like a local high school talent show? I doubt they were like, "Great rehearsal! Here's your cd back. Remember to bring it tomorrow!" lmao. I think there's prbly some spin happening on all sides.
