  • he and giselle should have a subunit together lol

    She's half-Korean, half-Japanese iirc. He's Zainichi Korean and from what he's implied, he's ethnically Korean, while she's Korean-Japanese.

  • you two seem to know your stuff

    what's a Zainichi Korean?

Koreans that live in Japan since generations. They were blamed after W2 for a lot of things that happened plus a lot of war crimes were targeted at them. Until now, a lot of Zainichi Koreans are discriminated which has the consequences that they don’t disclose their ethnicity a lot of times. There are also other types of Zainichis e.g. Chinese, North Koreans that also face the same discriminations

    interesting...

    you learn something new everyday

    thanks mate

  • That's a big decision to reveal it .

And if he can choose nationality it's still a double edge sword.

Choosing japanese will surely make in into Korean news especially if he's a Zainichi Korean .

Choosing Korean on the other hand are not as bad as in term of public reaction in Japan coz the one who's gonna enjoy him are japanese kpop fans anyway which is still a niche.

The biggest drawback is military enlistment but he will get a good press just like 2pm taecyeon.

    Case in point .

He's brave and I applause that

  • Oh this has been known for a while now. That's why the other members call him by his Korean name sometimes, Kim Bonbangjeon. Zainichi mostly came after WWII.

Although he may be ethnically Japanese-Korean. I believe his dad's side is Korean. Of course his dad passed away a few years ago.

Yoshi took Korean high school exams a couple of years ago.

This report was from a long time ago showing Yoshi was enrolled in a Korean International school in Japan. For kids who want to stay close to their Korean identity.

FYI, there's no such thing as dual citizenship in Korea. Korea requires you to renounce your citizenship from your country before you can become a Korean citizen.

    Although there are some exceptions.

  • There's no dual citizenship in Japan as well, once Yoshi turned 22, he is required to choose.

Required to choose implies he has both, Japan follows Ius sanguini principle so unless atleast one of his parents is a national or he naturalizes he has no choice

How do you know she is Half both? The only confirmation I know is that one of her aunts is a Korean journalist and is even supposedly dating Lee Sooman

I also suspect more supposedly foreigners are hiding their heritage, for example one of the NCT Chinese members is speculated to be a Joseonjok(Chinese of Korean ethnicity)

You are right about Japan and Korea's rule about giving citizenship. He is not a dual citizen. His family has been living in Japan for 4 generations but I guess his parents (and grandparents) are all korean. He has Korean nationality only and just special residency visa in Japan.

Aespa Giselle already revealed that she is half-half. She was born in Seoul to a Korean mother but her father is Japanese, so unlike Yoshi (who was born in Japan but wasn't given citizenship there) she had dual citizenship when she was little but she chose Japanese citizenship when she came of age, so now she is just a foreigner in Korea.

This is the information that we've been told so far, by people who knew her etc. so I'm just going along with that. Unless she states otherwise, this is what I'll assume, but that will make no difference to me either way.

Same as people say NCT Ten is ethnically Chinese - we never got the confirmation for it as far as I remember, but it's also long been speculated. Renjun being possibly ethnically Korean is an assumption based on the are he is from, which has a huge ethnically Korean population.
