  • I don't know what to think about your thread because I googled "sigma males" and I find a positive defintion but I also read that the expression has to do with masculinists. Can you explain what you mean by "sigma males" ?

    it is a positive thing

but it started as a meme

basically socially awkward introverts who want to be the cool guys ( which everyone calls alpha ) start spreading words of this sigma male who basically doesnt play by the rules and doesnt care about anyone's validation hence is alone but at the same time is so cool that everyone wants to be them

basically its a caricature of the aloof but attractive main character trope seen in a lot of male-focused media

but in this context, i did mean it in a positive way

i dont particularly like the song but i really love the lyrics

  • the whole thing," alpha, beta & sigma" sounds dumb to me like isn't it based on wolves behaviour?

and the idea itself was kind of flawed ( dont ask me, google urself to find out why).

at the end of the day it sounds like a personality test (men version).

no one actually uses the term sigma unironically lol

its basically a meme version of the anime protagonist trope mainly targetted at socially awkward people

but in this context, i just wanted to point out how much of the "supposed" behaviour of sigma males is portrayed ( if they actually existed)

simply put, i love the lyrics of this song

  • If you mean it in the sense that the "sigma male" refuses to conform to society's expectations if he doesn't agree with them and is often in equal parts simultaneously admired and hated for his independent thinking, then yes, I agree IDOL is very much about that and to an extent, that extends to BTS too since this song is very much about their past experiences and how they view them. I love the lyrics too.

It's a not a term often heard around here, so I tried to provide some explanation and then context about how it might relate.

I didn't exactly love IDOL when I first heard it, but it really grew on me. Now it's one of my favorites of all time. Maybe it'll be the same for you. Are you a fan of BTS?

not exactly a fan but I have like a lot of songs from them in the past

    even some full albums

I liked their edgy image a lot more than the mainstream pop sound they have now so I dont quite listen to them as much anymore but I was just going back thru their catalog with a friend yesterday and he thought this song and video was too cartoony then i told him the context and showed him the lyrics and he liked it

Nice! Yea, one of the great things about BTS is how big their discography is and the number of styles they've explored in their eight years. Something for everyone is how I like to say it.

  • You can say so. BTS lyrics are just for that. You can interpret them the way you want. You can relate BTS song's lyrics with yourself, your experiences more often than not.

In broader perspective, BTS lyrics are more in line with the concept and theme they are going for the particular album and era.

'IDOL' is a main single from the album titled 'Love Yourself : Answer'. 'IDOL' is where they have realised that self love is the most important and are proclaiming that they are not afraid of loving themselves anymore. Intro for this album was 'Epiphany' where Jin was starting to realise the same. The last song of the album and era as a whole is 'Answer : Love Myself' where they are telling people what they have learned throughout this journey of 'Love Yourself'. That self love is the most important and to learn from their experience and start doing the same.

  • This is an interesting discussion. Thanks OP.

I remember when Idol was released, we got such polarising reaction from both fans and non-fans. It didn’t help that the teaser was so different from the actual song lol.

Idol was also released at the time when BTS was facing so many backlash or negative reactions from the west, because they were getting more and more known there. The lyrics get more meaningful when you think about that time, what they faced and how they felt.

In fact, if you scroll thru BTS’ discography and understand their lyrics, everything was related to their current situation so it’s kinda like a memory lane of sorts for me...

I have to look up based and red pilled. Still don’t really understand. Thank goodness I can say English is my second language lol

  • its all meme language dude

its supposed to be ironic, not serious

based and redpilled basically refers to someone saying an unpleasant truth

it doesnt make sense in this context because i didnt use them seriously
