  • I actually have no idea since I only heard a total of like 5 or 6 songs of these countries (and this is a lot if you consider the fact that I live in Europe and I'm not even Asian). But from the songs I saw I could maybe say Vietnam cause one artist had also a few English coments under his MVs. and he had on most MV more views than people live in Vietnam. So yeah... but other than that : I don't even know ... that is actually the same hard to say as if you would say "is it harder to learn German ot Dutch?"

    A.C.E | ATEEZ | DRIPPIN| MCND | NU'EST | ONF | SF9 | Stray Kids | TFN

  • I don't think either of them are particularly popular outside their home countries.

However, I would say the Thai media industry in general has A LOT more foreign fans than Vietnam's media industry, particularly in the BL sector but increasingly also non-BL content (e.g. The Gifted, Bad Genius, Who Are You, etc.)

This is evident because the comments under Thai series are pretty international, ranging from Japan to South America.

Thai content has long been popular in China (there is usually a Thai section for many streaming sites, many Thai dramas have won popularity awards in China, many Thai idols/celebs are active in China with huge fanbases - the same can't really be said for Vietnam), it's also getting popular in Japan (TV Asahi announcing partnership with GMMTV to air Thai content in Japan), it's popular in Southeast Asia, particularly Philippines & Indonesia, Thai idols and celebrities top worldwide Twitter trends on a regular basis.

This in turn translates to interest in Thai pop culture in general, so when one of the actors or actresses launch a T-Pop/music project, this attracts a lot of attention from international fans. I think the challenge for the Thai media industry now is how to capitalize on that international interest. But first, before T-Pop can get big internationally, it has to get big in Thailand first. Right now, Thai music industry is dominated by rap & luk thung (country folk) music, similar to how trot is currently dominating in Korea or how hip hop is popular in America. T-Pop isn't as popular in Thailand the way it once was, and many Thais are also wondering what it would take to revive the pop genre in the country.

  • I reckon Tpop

  • Thai pop is pretty much about sad ballads sad songs. It's always been this way songs that you would hear in night clubs. It's very diverse actually. But sad lyrics are pretty common

These days they like older styles including the way they dress (90s,00s,80s)

  • V-pop is also dominated by ballads.

In V-pop, there have been also been retro style music videos that came out recently from popular V-pop artists :

    Vietnam : 1980s and 1990s retro style :

It seems that there is a retro style trend in music around the world now.

The Vietnamese public like music videos with a story which is why you see so many Vietnamese music videos with a story.

Do the Thai public also like music videos with a story ?

  • Yes. And since I remember

  • And are those T-pop music videos with a story prominent like basically a normal trend in T-pop ?

"Trend" sounds like it's temporal but, this has been a part of T-pop since forever. Earliest form of T-pop mv is plainly the motion picture of the artist performing the song.

  • oh a revived thread re Thai Pop!

It would have been nice to see a Thai pop and Vietnamese pop music appreciation instead of making it a competition between the two.

I myself go in and out of Thai music. There are some great bands and musicians from Thailand. I randomly select some really well known Thai groups and musicians that I also personally love or enjoy

Bodyslam - rock band has a lot of foreign fans
