True, SNSD have been unsurpassed variety queens up till now.

The variety skills and level of groups and idols in 2nd gen era was overall higher due to all of them lifting eachother up to higher variety levels - but even then SNSD were on another level when it came to variety.

A shame, actually, the high level of variety and comic relief interaction is what made all these interactions between idols of different companies and groups so entertaining and addictive to watch - they knew how to banter without it feeling unnatural or forced. It was very much around in 2nd gen era but in the years after it just seemed to die down.
