Do you consider this offensive?

  • I don't consider the American flag or flying it to be offensive in any way. To pretend that America is especially racist or oppressive is ignorant and conveniently excludes most of world history. Go read "The Rape of Nanking" and tell me that flying a Japanese flag is not offensive based on those atrocities and crimes against humanity. There are sitting African Presidents (I forget which region(s)) who unapologetically and openly denounce homosexuality, today in 2021. Yeah, we (The US) do some things that I don't agree with and our current president is an absolute fucking joke and everyone knows it, but there's a reason why people risk their lives to come here and it's not because it's a particularly oppressive nation. It's actually a very generous nation to a fault and Anglo/Euro countries in general treat women better than many countries that go unscathed in conversations like this where people demonize America and mainly white America. People pretend that slavery was an American invention, simply not true. Look at your own roots, study world history, look at atrocities going on every day around the globe, look at it honestly and it makes it less easy to judge. I proudly fly an American flag and believe that national pride is a strong trait. The US is admittedly eroding and losing its identity to woke, self righteous, self-loathing, mass immigration, and overly celebrated multiculturalism.

  • No, idg why progressives push the minorities triggered by flags part a ton. Flags are cool, they unite people. Moderns in the west are generally too atomized so much so you'll see them flagellate themselves to hate their own country which they live on and shame anyone who shows pride in it, which is an interesting phenonma which you don't see in well many places beyond what's considered the west(yes eastern Europe does not count as the west here, they're always in a debatable area by terminology in polisci and history, of course they're going to have more nationalists after communism). Africans countries for example freed themselves from colonel rule though nationalist leaders after all, and if you are anti-capitalist pretty much every communist leader has always had nationalist leanings, even the bizarre example of Stalin, a Georgian running a Russian-dominated state.

i knew this thread had some underlying weirdass Teshub k-pop motive!

y'know, considering you don't give a fuck about minorities and you've made many anti-Chinese comments... stop acting like you fucking care, it's offensive and weird especially considering you live outside of America. i don't consider the American flag to be offensive because it's the American flag. of course it's weird when people are hell-bent on flying it and obsessed with it, but otherwise i don't see an issue with it. people are pushing this weirdass "minorities are offended by the American flag" narrative... most of us couldn't give less of of a fuck. if people want to fly it, then they can fly it, if they don't, then it's their choice! it's the extremes (flag burning or fucking worshipping the flag) that are the issue.

I feel like both of you hit the nail on the head. I don't know why, but I'll give my own two cents as an American. I find it cool in the sense that: "Oh, hey, they're another American, that's nice to know. I'm happy they're proud of their country and where they came from," and it ends there. I think if people want to wave the flag of where they came from, as long as it's done in a respectful way, why shouldn't they? We can't control where we are born, so we might as well embrace it, as well as acknowledge all the good and bad things the country we came from did. Yes, I'll be the first to admit it, America has a messed up in the past, but name me a country that doesn't. Have a great day/night!

  • I'm American and a military brat so while I still salute the flag, I also understand and empathetic to the motivations to not want to fly it, be angry about it and/or burn it. I would agree here that has most definitely been co-opted by the right wing. As a BIPOC, I certainly have conflicting opinions sometimes - my country has done terrible things to my ancestors and continues to do terrible things to people today, yet I also enjoy living here and the freedoms, rights and wealth that my relatives fought for me to have, not only on the battlefield but in the voter registration booth.

  • I’ve read some fans feel offended when an idol allegedly glorifies a country involved in the oppression of minorities, such as China and Israel. America has a longgggg history of oppression, from the genocide of Powhatan tribes to the bombing of Muslims. For this reason the American flag is banned in certain places because it hurts minorities if they see it. https://time.com/4472433/american-flag-ban-south-carolina/
