Why didn't Psycho win SOTY 2020?

    • Official Post

I second this. I know SOTY is opinionated unless we’re talking about statistics, but I really think this song was really good enough to at least be part of the conversation. It really deserved more promotion.

  • It came out in 2019, but since it was a late december release it was almost considered for all the award shows for 2020 and the award shows took its 2020 stats. In general it had overall better stats than the other 2020 SOTY contenders due to having longer tracking time(the whole year), but in terms of hit size in general it isn't higher than a few idol grp songs last year which came out late in the year like HYLT, Dynamite so it didn't win anything

Actually, Psycho had better first month/first 8 weeks scores than HYLT, Nonstop and other 2020 hit songs except for BTS' Dynamite.

My guess is that it got snowed under due to no promotion (bc of SBS induced injury of Wendy) and that it got snowed under by Changmo's Meteor and Zico's Any Song that dominated in the same time period, which is why people tend to forget or underestimate how extremely well Psycho did despite all the setbacks.

But it did really, extremely well on a wide range of digital scores on Melon and other digital media.

This actually isn’t quite true. As you can see, HYLT performed better in its first 30 days than Psycho, by a slight amount. Though, you also have to take into account that HYLT was unequivocally the biggest song for around 4 weeks and in a less healthy market because of COVID affecting the charts.

From what I see, it's comparing Psycho's first 30 days with HYLT's first 5 weeks, which isn't quite the same.

I looked at Gaon's first 4 weeks and first 8 weeks for both Psycho and HYLT, where Psycho actually does somewhat better.

I'd say that Psycho did this even with a big disadvantage, since its complete comeback and promotion cycle got cut short immediately right at the start, and it did this while having strong competition of Changmo's Meteor and Zico's Any Song who're the #1 and #2 on Gaon's annual chart and who both had top digitals for their first months.

Check again. It most definitely did not outperform HYLT and I tot this was common knowledge as for girlgroups, HYLT had one of the biggest starts to a song in years.

Gaon takes first 30 days data from all songs and compare them, and during the gaon year end awards HYLT had better stats for its first 30 days than Psycho by a slight margin, which is widened even more after the month.

Not only did HYLT had more unique listeners, it topped melon for 21 days, had PAKs, had the most gaon points in a week for any idol group song last year as well. I don't understand where Psycho beat HYLT at all

I think your misunderstanding is HYLT's first week of tracking on gaon. HYLT was released on a friday, Psycho on a monday.

So Psycho had 4 more days of tracking in its first week compared to HYLT. Which is why gaon took only Psycho's first 4 weeks + 2 days from the 5th week of gaon stats to calculate its first 30 days. 7(First Week)+7+7+7+2 =30days

HYLT on the other hand took full 5 weeks because it only had 2 days of tracking in its first week, hence such a low gaon digitals in its first week skyrocketed in the second week.

2(First week)+7+7+7+7 =30 days. Gaon is fair in calculating scores for all song and takes first 30 days data of the songs no matter when it is released.

Go look at BTS songs which are also released on a friday and u will see the same lower first week gaon digitals but its is not that they performed worst in the first week, they just had lesser tracking time.

Which is why for Psycho and HYLT, if u are just looking at the total numbers for the first 4weeks/8weeks, u are just looking at a scenario where HYLT always had 4 less days of tracking data than Psycho, hence the slightly lower points. In reality, HYLT was outperforming Psycho already from the start.

That, however, does not take away how big of a song Psycho is tho, I would say its even bigger than Dalla Dalla due to its longetivity for the biggest gg song released in 2019. But it is not bigger than HYLT.

  • PAK is a matter of luck, or bad luck in some cases, it all depends what other songs are released and how strong they are.

Psycho had the misfortune that it couldn't profit from a comeback cycle, and it had the #1 and #2 song of Gaon's 2020 chart it had to deal with; but even then it stayed #2 and #3 on Melon's for weeks until mid February. If not for those 2 other songs (Any Song and Meteor) it would've been #1 nonstop for 6-7 weeks.

So in several ways, what could've become RV's strongest comeback was instead their most unfortunate one. If not for all that misfortune befalling them that comeback, who knows how things would've turned out.

But even then, Psycho broke a lot of achievements on the charts (nationally and internationally), in how fast it reached milestones in streams and ULs and how much it was liked.

For example, this is how well it was liked on Melon

As for the digitals, you're right and I agree: when you pick the exact number of days since release date, then HYLT has a slightly higher digital score when you check for first 30 days and first 60 days.
