What's with people avoiding the term bisexual?

  • but the origin of the word is in direct relation to the prefix ' bi ' which is two or twice. It's origin is based solely on the idea of 2 genders.

Language and terms are always evolving along with semantics, but it being commonly perceived as something in relation just to 2 genders isn't the wrong definition. Nor is it something completely abolished by new views just yet.

So yes, I get what Kesha is saying. But I also agree the word means something different for a lot of people today and is way more inclusive. Though if you ask a large collection of people, you're going to get mixed answers/beliefs as per usual.

Exactly. There are many people that sounds like bisexual but label themselves as Queer/Pan/Omni. I know some people who are figuring out are also labelled as queer. There’s a blur between sexualities, but i don’t think it’s bi-erasure at all. A lot of fellow Bisexuals i know have inclinations (manly men + tomboyish women or vice versa), so I guess those people who don’t have these kind of preferences would rather label themselves as Pan.

  • From what I've always known/thought, Bisexual people are specifically attracted to only cis-men and cis-women while Pansexual people can be attracted to anyone with no boundaries.

  • I agree, but you know how people are. Some of them have some deep rooted issues and refuse to understand that.

It is called preferences, by the same logic of these people straight people are phobic for only liking the other gender or gay people are phobic for only liking the same gender.

People need to get over the fact that not everyone will be sexually attracted to them, and that people are not attracted to every group or type of people.

But people love denying reality in order to feel good in some fantasy world, and they have to force everyone else to go along with it so they don't feel bad.

  • hmm...interesting

basically words have meanings...meanings of words can change and evolve...new words can be created to fill in the gaps of previous words...

there are textbook definitions of words and also how words are used in public or with friend or online...

  • Hmm I guess it's because it has a negative image associated around it, especially in the media. I think of bisexuality as being able to feel an attraction toward two genders, girls and guys. I don't think it involves "other" genders at all. That's not bisexuality, but that's my opinion. It doesn't mean you have a phobia or whatever. People want to walk on eggshells to avoid making other people feel offended. But at the end of the day, it's down to what you feel and not what others think.

  • Bilingual literally means you speak two languages

Trilingual means three and so on...

    It's not a difficult concept

  • So if you think pansexuality is a subsection of bisexuality, then that implies you believe bisexuality encompasses pansexuality right? Or in other words bisexuality is more broad and includes more to its definition than pansexuality? That really doesn't make sense given that the prefixes of the words tell a different story. Pan means all and Bi means 2. So shouldn't pansexuality be more inclusive in its definition and bisexuality be less?

Bi sexuality already meant being attracted to more than one gender. Not just two.

  • The problem seems to be that people are assuming bisexual means only being attracted to cis man or cis women. But historically bisexuality has always included attraction to more than one gender.

You may want to call yourself Pan because you feel comfortable about it. Power to you. But this will not change the fact that people have historically used bisexuality to refer to attraction to more than one gender.

Hence why Pan sexuality is a subsect of bisexuality.
