  • They could have but they are airing at the same time as SDC's 4th season, so I guess they were filmed around the same time too - I doubt any big name that is willing to go on a TV show would pick SWF over SDC when the latter has so many legends this year and Tonygogo as the judge, lol. Plus I don't really get why would they limit the competition by gender.

Mnet should have licensed the SDC format (or rip it off, lol) and use idols as captains for promotion, plus tone down the drama so that idols could actually learn from all these great dancers instead of being shat on for existing - like, they are literally using Chayeon as a punching bag to sell the show. Yibo & Lay really grown as dancers after being on SDC - the former now is a solid locker, while the latter got into krumping. Mnet could have done the same with Chayeon + other idols.

    SDC? Good taste 8)

yeap she's watched it all the way from season 1

  • Honey J posted this teaser on her Insta stories and questioned why these teasers were edited to be so dramatic when it wasn't at all irl.

Most of these women are close friends irl and street dance, esp in Korea where the scene is comparatively smaller, is a very supportive industry.

SWF also has so many legends wdym. Lip J, Monika, Honey J, and Rihey are the tops of the tops in their respective disciplines.

As for gender, street dance is still a very male dominated dance stream. I'm glad they're giving female dancers the chance to shine since the scene can get pretty misogynistic.

Taemin is a good dancer, but imo even he has no business judging a street dance competition when his own street dance and freestyle experience is lacking (and I say this as a Shawol).

They should be bringing in judges with street dance experience - JHope, Shotaro etc. These three judges have absolutely no idea how dance battles work. Even Kang Daniel would be a better judge than them.

However, a Korean dancer explained why they didn't bring in actual street dancers to judge. I'll try outlining some reasons here:

1 - Even in the Korean street dance scene, there aren't many who can judge the dancers on the show. They're the cream of the crop.

2 - The street dance circle in Korea is super small, which means every dancer has a personal connection to another - friend, enemy, teacher, student etc. So, if they bring street dancers to judge, they will 99% be influenced by personal bias when they pass their judgements (like giving wins to their teachers, purposely making enemies lose etc).

3 - These dancers are on the show so they can gain a following and get more mainstream opportunities. They aren't there to be validated by judges so they don't care who's judging them. This is already being achieved. If you look at the demo videos that these dancers have done for idols (for example, the Lachica demo for Aespa's Next Level), earlier, comments only used to talk about the idols (like "oh, Aespa's choreo is better"), but now they're fangirling over the dancers themselves (in that video, a lot of comments are fangirling over Siameez).

  • yeah but if you have to pick taeyong or taemin who would you pick? at least Taemin has more credibility as a dancer he might not be the best judge for a street dance competition, but it's obvious that Mnet wanted an idol as a judge.

but aren't Monika and lipj super popular in the street dancing scene though?

ps: I like taeyong it's just I don't think he is ready yet to be a judge

  • Well, Taemin is in army right now. He's not an option anyway.

I don't think J-hope would participate, I don't see any BTS memebrs doing solo activities right now.

From all other options (idols) I see only Kai as a candidate :) But he would probably be biased 8) As a Taeyong fan I can't complain ;-)

yeah Kai was my second option but then I remember he worked with one of the contestants so it wouldn't be fair either.

if they had to pick someone from NCT, I would’ve actually gone for Jisung. Kai doesn’t have street experience either

  • it’s obvious Monika and Lip J wanted to participate instead of judge. They want to raise their profile just like every other contestant.

Also, they have the same drawbacks. Half the contestants on the show are their students (Lee Jung for example) or friends - they wouldn’t be unbiased judges.

Monika and Riann are also backs up dancers/ choreographers for Taemin so same drawback

  • Jisung? :/ He's a great dancer and I hope he will have an opportunity to show himself in this role in the future, but for now I think Jisung would be even more questionable choice that any other idol mentioned before.

Wasn't he in a street popping crew ever since he was a child?

I mentioned if SM wanted to shoehorn someone from NCT. My first choice would be Shotaro, but someone mentioned his Korean was limited, so I'm going with Jisung.

Some other dancers with street experience who'd make great judges but who aren't as popular - BigFlo's Euijin (one of the best idol dancers, his group was known as 'the group with Euijin in it' in the street dance community when they debuted), FeelDog (another super underrated street-based dancer), Hotshot Noh Taehyun (one of the only krump-focused main dancers in Kpop, another fantastic street dancer).

In fact, if this show picks up and has several seasons like SMTM and Unpretty, I think the next season will be male-focused and those idols will actually compete. Since there are more male street dancers in Kpop than female, it'll be interesting to watch for sure.
