Like many of you, I've noticed that there appear to be more idol songs at the top of the charts these days compared to earlier in the year.
To find out if that's actually the case, I gathered Gaon Weekly Streaming Chart data from the start of the year (week of 2020-12-27) to the last available update (week of 2021-08-08). I then pasted this information into a spreadsheet and classified each song in the top 20 each week as either an idol song or a non-idol song.
Following, I simply counted the number of idol sings for each week, and graphed the results as shown below:
As we can see, there has been a very noticeable increase in the number of idol songs in the top 20, starting from around the beginning of April.
Regarding the reason for this growth, my guess is that it was due to the Korean general public's fascination with the sudden rise of Brave Girls during the month of March.
Now of course I can't prove for certain that the viral success of Rollin' was the cause of the increase, but it does make sense in my mind. Can anyone offer some alternative explanations?
