Lucas gets called "Little Black"....on a Chinese Variety Show...

  • Actually the Chinese language had offensive connotations since ancient times. They called Japanese midgets, southeast asians reptiles, and other foreigners as dogs or insects, in their characters, and westerners demons. I could list it.

But this one is not actually 'offensive', just off-color. But obviously in direct translation it seems racist, but it's more like saying 'swarthy' rather than true black.

    Yikes...

Cai Xukun was one of them too?

the tweet isn't loading what happened?

  • This is a totally misunderstood situation. I feel bad for the casts who are dragged badly on twitter especially Yuqi. If you notice the way Kun called Lucas, you will see that he acted like he's calling a dog coz Xiaohei is literally the common nickname for black dogs in China, not related to colorism at all.

How it isn't when that old guy told Lucas he gets called that due to his skin color??

  • i'm really not shocked at the chinese being anti-black considering how they act in general towards pushing skin lightening products in many impoverished nations.

It's very normal in Asia countries including China, they just mean the colors of skin. We have a lot of other words like yellow skin, pale skin, brown skin.... to describe not only white or black. And when we say that, we don't mean anti or something like colorism in Western countries where white and black are so sensitive, we just simply the colors of skin that someone has (in fact, girls here prefer light tones and men prefer dark ones). The casts wondered why he has that dog's nickname (it makes him like little bit stupid) when he was young and guessed coz of his skin color. If we use the prejudice of Western to apply for Asia, many things are very different. Just like if you kiss on the cheek to greet, it's considered normal in America but in some Asian countries, it's totally rude.

Exactly. Woke TW stans thinking "colorism" began in Asia because of racism against black people just shows how freaking ignorant they are. And how entitled and colonialist they are thinking the world revolves around Western standards and perspectives.

No, dummies, colorism happenened because dark skin was associated with subsistence farming while people with cash sat around indoors and drank tea.

Right. They make us become colorism like their countries. How ignorant they are. If the nickname of Lucas was "little white" which is also a common nickname for white dogs in China, they would still laugh and tease him. The problem here is the meaning of the nickname, not the word black or white.

Agree. As an Asian, I'm so annoyed with the way they think our countries have colorism problem like them.

  • I have heard Chinese people use Xiao to address their younger acquaintances who they are close. I did ask a friend who is a native speaker. The slur is 小黑鬼 not 小黑. With the last character, it means little black demon which is a slur against black people. If the last character isn't there, it's most likely a nickname which, based on what some posters have mentioned here, seems to be the case.
