Are HYBE, KakaoM and CUBE Ent. stupid?

  • They have signed a contract with the Chinese music platform NetEase on the exclusive distribution of their songs.

The stupid thing is that this platform controls only 16% of the streaming market

84% of the Chinese music audience can't listen to BTS, IU nor Gidle! O_o

You may say that it doesn't metter because those who are interested in kpop use NetEase. But it's not the case... For example 3 million users are following the Senior Singer on QQ Music (even though they can't listen to her songs)

So are these companies stupid? Okey, they accepted the deal because NetEsase probably proposed a lot of money. But they deprive themselves of 84% of the Chinese audience... It's strange....

  • surprised no BP there

BP should be on the second place with 5M followers

I think that list is actually the ranking of female soloists

  • Maybe it's a package deal where they also gain some concessions / promotion for their gaming-related businesses? NetEase isn't much in the music distribution space, but they DO have some significant influence in the gaming industry. They're the main partners for Blizzard Ent (World of Warcraft, Overwatch) as well as Mojang (Minecraft) in China, and are minority stakeholders for both Bungie (HALO) and Quantic Dream (Heavy Rain). The companies (especially KakaoM) would probably be interested in making some connections there...

  • I don’t think that didn‘t try to go that direction but sometimes some business deals or contract conditions are not profitable or useful enough. We all know how much say and volatile the Chinese government can be with their sudden borders and constant changing mindsets about the outerworld

Plus: in a lot of business deals the Chinese government forces companies into joint ventures which enables them to get an access into internally matters so that they can access easier knowledge and information. In the end they use that for themselves and then throw away or blackmail the companies into bad contracts

  • Interesting, this company has its main headquarters in both Hong Kong and the Cayman Islands. The Cayman Islands headquarters are the biggest and the Hong Kong one is an intermediate holding company.

Anyways, I think gaming is the main attraction that this company has:

    Let me quote them:

"(...)we have been partnering with Blizzard since 2008 to exclusively operate a number of its games in China, including World of Warcraft, the StarCraft II series, Diablo III, Hearthstone, Heroes of the Storm and Overwatch. Blizzard has also licensed on an exclusive basis in China its Battle.net® platform to us, which enables multi-player interaction within these games and other online services. In January 2019, we further extended our partnership to January 2023. Furthermore, we are currently co-developing Diablo ImmortalTM, an MMO action-RPG, with Blizzard. We have also entered into a partnership with Marvel in May 2019 to create original entertainment content based on internationally beloved Marvel characters and stories. We are jointly developing products including games and comic books that feature Marvel characters for users in China and beyond.
In addition, in May 2016, we entered into a five-year exclusive agreement with Microsoft, pursuant to which Microsoft agreed to license both the mobile and PC versions of Minecraft to us for operation in China until 2022. In May 2019, we extended the term of the Minecraft license for an additional year to August 2023. We successfully introduced both versions of Minecraft in China across various platforms in 2017."

Seems like that 80% may soon decrease while NetEase and other can use the opportunity to grow.
