Why do some companies sabotage their own artists?

  • Honestly the way the idol industry works is just cut-throat and sucks for fans in the long run.

You have these 7 years contracts and at the start the company is investing a lot in you to get to a point where you're self-sustainable. Lets say that's 4 years in and at this point there's an upward trajectory for the group but it's not anomalous (see BTS). At that point you have a choice to make, continue to invest in this group which is risky (outside of the group being anomalous it may be something smaller companies do for capital purposes) or go back to the start and invest in a new group to start the 7 year cycle again which is more risk averse (very much a JYPE thing to do), whilst milking your self-sustainable group as much as you can to re-invest the profits into your new group(s).

The reason the continue to invest route is risky is there's never a guarantee all the members will re-sign. Lets say JYPE did continue investing strongly going into their 6/7th year, it'd be at the expense of spending money/attention on another group. Then at the end of 7 years 2/3 decide not to renew, that asset they've built in Got7 suddenly has lost a lot of value and their junior products are not as far along as they can be as they kept their attention on Got7. Unless all the members renewed early a risk averse company, which is exactly what JYPE are, will always start to look elsewhere to protect future investments.

JYPE are the worst for it in the big three as they purely rely on the idol business, so if that asset they keep investing in going into year 7 suddenly loses a lot of its value they have the least to fall back on. They are not your SM/YG or even Big Hit now that have diversified investments with idol groups being just one segment in their business, which is why they were falling out of the big 3 until Twice blew up.

Twice are probably the closest you can get to a GG being anomalous (they became the best selling kpop gg ever in just over 3 years) but not fully, yet JYPE is still looking elsewhere and beyond them. They have willingly cannobalised the group in their biggest market (Japan) by debuting Nizi and stopped trying in the other (SK) in favour of using their brand power to make paths elsewhere for the companies future groups.

  • How did JYPE sabotage Got7?

The majority of Got7's career relied on Music they didn't compose or write lyrics to.

In fact, during The Intern, it was clear that members had no interest in even making music.

    JB produces music...

Almost every member is capable of writing music, the fact is, JYP rejected multiple times...

  • We are just fans and so we don’t know what actually goes on behind the scenes. From the artiste side I can say maybe jealousy. For instance the act and the head don’t have a good relationship because the act doesn’t follow what the head wants. In this case the head doesn’t care much for profits and just wants to patch his ego which is very stupid but I know this can happen too.

Secondly from the company side, maybe it’s not worth investing into the act in the long run. I know as fans we want what’s best for the artistes but the company see things through a business lens. And we know most of these idols are not much interested in this career option as a whole and it’s more or less a steppingstone for them for their actual careers such ac acting, CF deals or influencers. So being an idol is just to create some sort of presence for them, the music was never first. And this point is more plausible to me compared to the first since this is usually what happens. In such situations the company makes plans to cater to such an act and they make contracts where both idols and company sign so IMO it’s a 2 way deal.

  • according to YG oppar himslef, he deliberately created SWI.T and recruit sechkies member's "lil sis", then YG oppar sabotage that group so he could marry that "lil sis", whom YG oppar already fall in love with that girl when she just 13 years old.
