Lip Sync Has Become More Common?

  • I feel like whenever you bring up the recent increase in lip sync in kpop, a bunch of people say "kpop has always been lip sync, this isn't a new thing, get used to it", and yeah, there has obviously always been lip sync in kpop (i'd say 1st gen kpop was even worse than today because lip syncing was allowed to run rampant and idols weren't as trained to sing live back then) but I seriously feel like in recent years there has been an increase in lip sync.

I was reminded to make this thread when I watched this stage compilation(RIP Gfriend) and I noticed that they sang live in all their Show Champion stages from 2015~ up until about 2018 when suddenly they no longer sang live. this isn't specific to Gfriend I'm just using this as an example, because I feel like around 2018 when kpop blew up in the West, a lot of groups stopped singing live indefinitely. Now a lot of these rookies that debuted after 2018 I don't think have ever had a live stage.

What do you guys think? Am I delulu or stating the obvious?

  • Were they really singing live back then or simply using those fake live vocals they still use sometimes today? I just looked at a WJSN stage from their Happy era days in 2017 and they're lip synching. Only thing is they don't use the backtrack straight from the record, but some kind of pre-recorded "live" singing track.

in my opinion, in the video i linked in my OP, it was not prerecorded. you can hear mistakes like members being off tempo/missing lines, and overall there are too many inconsistencies and imperfections to be prerecorded imo

  • What bothers me more than lip syncing is that most groups don’t know how to properly lip sync. I’ve lost count of how many idols barely move their lips when lip syncing.

  • I agree it is too. I know sometimes groups have to do it for shows etc, but it is annoying. I would rather here a live performance than just the actual song in the background and their lips moving. It spoils it for me. If I want to hear the studio version I’ll listen to it on my playlist.
