Anonymity. Mobs, forum users, security forces wearing masks will do and say the worst things because they aren't personally known and accountable.

Politics. I don't know about in other countries, but dear god, politics in my country can make almost anyone turn ugly fast...

When their insecurities get triggered.
Most of the time it’s those with insecurities who feel so extremely attached to something (may it be religion, ethnicity, or simply a music act, are sports team or politics) that every kind of criticism can make them loose it, because their whole confidence depends on it.
But also if you got hurt and can’t get over it. Bitterness and inability to forgive can bring out the worst in people too.
