Why do people say 3rd gen is the reason 4th gen cannot take off?

Makes zero sense. They aren't stopping anyone's progress
-
It's because the most popular 3rd gen groups are still getting more popular due to the influx of international fans.
In 2nd gen most of the big groups were winding down by their 6th year, but that's not the case in 3rd gen.
4th gen is fighting a losing battle against 3rd gen for now. Until we see 4th gen BGs outsell the likes of SVT, NCT, and BP, 4th gen is not going go go anywhere.

3rd gens are becoming irrelevant ? where is that happening.

Honestly, I doubt any of the top groups are irrelevant. Although RV needs a comeback to judge if they're still in the game or not as a group.

in Korea outside of bts and bp 3rd gen has largely become irrelevant in 2020 . OMG was a surprise. 3rd gen doing well in album sales still.

kpop is very fandom based so already majority of the kpop community is for 3rd gen groups, it is dif for 4th gen groups to create large fanbase even though they do great, if they cant grab new gen of fans they will still be flop, but i luv my flops

Whether 3rd gen groups are growing or declining, the fact is in this industry absolutely no group is blocked from success because of another group. This must be the lamiest excuse to make and unfortunately I read it quite a bit
There isn't market space for every group, that's a fact
However the success of a specific group or rather a set of groups isn't the reason for another group to not reach the stardom
Specially because the bounds of the market space isn't well delineated. It's a misconception that kpop fans is some kind of weird non-changeable pool of customers, as if there is a limit of people interested in kpop and if you want a fan you absolutely need to "steal" from other groups
Worse, people act like stanning a kpop group is a natural necessity when it's absolutley not. If let's say Twice starting to tank and sells 10k copies it doesn't mean Onces are suffering a diaspora and looking for other groups to stan
That's why amuses me the threads asking which groups are going to dominate once BTS disband, as if BTS fans are going to desperately stick anybody just for the sake of keeping stanning someone

No other group than bts and bp from the third generation is going to be a burden to 4th gen groups. 4th gen groups are already outselling 3rd gen groups, they are insane voters (physicals and high votes = very dedicated fandoms that can get them to the top). The only thing 3rd gen groups have over 4th are digitals but then again, 4th gen ggs are slowly but surely starting to eat them up too so... When people say "3rd gen prevenrs 4th to grow" it means "bts and bp prevent them from to grab the full attention", no other 3rd gen group is relevant anymore and no other 3rd gen is unbeatable

not true at all. Excluding album sales, since you already noted they’re doing well there...
Last year, Spotify’s top Kpop artists streamed globally included #3 Twice, #5 Red Velvet, #6 EXO, #7 Seventeen, #9 NCT 127.
Similarly, many of these same groups remain relevant on Twitter: NCT, EXO, GOT7, Seventeen, Twice.

4th gen is always gonna be overshadowed by 3rd gen to be honest. They debuted at the worst time when 3rd gen were still rising and hadn’t peaked yet.
The only way I see 4th gen groups becoming the forefront of kpop is if the top 3rd gen groups go on hiatus or disband. And even then there’s no guarantee that Korea will care about 4th gen the way they did 3rd gen.

3rd gen groups are becoming irrelevant, 4th gen has never been relevant well for 2nd gen we all know the story. RIP kpop
