I think SM is aiming for the VR world. Anticipate VR fan meetings in a style similar to VRchat. LSM said something about the creation of something where everyone (the fans) can have avatars like the Aespa members. Not to mention they made up a virtual world where the avatars reside. Therefore anticipate VR fan meetings with Aespa members (and possibly other SM artists) in SYNK of their own avatars (basically like VRchat so you hear them and see them talking to you through the avatars live).

It's similar to ZEPETO but the difference is that:
1) it's created exclusively by them.
2) the character designs are different (no matter how bad the Ai aespa characters look to you, I bet they look better than ZEPETO).
3) the avatar and fan meeting experience interaction goes both ways as avatars, not just the group members but also the fans' avatars can be seen by the idols. As if they are meeting in the real world.
4)not only developing avatars but background/the world surrounding them. Making the vr experience more realistic
They had the AI members idea since 2015 so I think at that time it was a way to connect to fans from all over the world. But now it's even more desirable after COVID-19 happened that made offline fan meetings not possible.

UPDATE
sm announced their partnership with KAIST! and this article pretty much confirms the theory:
"KAIST, South Korea's top science university, is teaming up with K-pop powerhouse SM Ent. to conduct joint research on digital avatars for virtual concerts in an effort to boost development in metaverse technology!
Through this agreement, SM and KAIST plan to jointly carry out technological cooperation in fields such as content, artificial intelligence, joint project related to digital avatar production.
They will create an online platform (Metaverse) where stars like Red Velvet & SNSD can meet/interact with fans in various activities such as fan meetings & concerts."
SM actually have VR theme-parks and fans could go there to see their idols in VR. Was announced in 2019.
Probably one of the many things that SM lost money over because of the pandemic. They have plenty of subsidiary businesses like that (shopping malls, cafes, stores..etc) and all got affected in 2020 losing tons of money because of lockdown rules.
So I won’t rule out the VR from your home experience. Which on contrary won’t have as much losses. They even announced collaborating to sell VR devices in the future.
SM Entertainment has announced the opening of its virtual reality theme park at its entertainment complex, SMTOWN Coex Artium.
On December 19, the label revealed the opening of its VR theme park on the 6th floor of the COEX Artium. The theme park will include 5 VR attractions for fans, who'll be able to experience virtual rides with their favorite SM Entertainment idols. So far, the confirmed themes are amusement park Everland's rides 'Safari & Lost Valley'
The label worked with experimental media group Thirteenth Floor to create the VR experiences, and it's reported they'll be collaborating to sell VR devices in the future.
If you are not familiar with VRchat
To summarize my theory
Did SM announce to create a virtual world and avatars for their artists and for the fans? Yes.
Did SM announce they will be collaborating on selling VR devices in the future? Yes.
Did SM say they will use interactive VR/AR for fans to meet idols? Yes.
Did SM announce Aespa AI members will have fans interactions/promotions (ie fan meetings) where both real and AI Aespa members go to each other's world? Yes
The only thing that needs to be confirmed in my theory is if they're going to apply all of it into interactive fan meetings in VR where both the artists and the fans meet cosplaying their avatars.
