I generally found this year's MAMA to be snoozefest. But I still watched so that I can be at least informed in my dislike toward it.
Firstly, I liked how many groups sang live. It's refreshing to see so many groups sing live yet the energy remaining on point, the entire performance so I'll give that to them. Some things I dislike is...well. It's gonna be a long read for you so get your popcorn ready as I rank the MAMA perfomances out of 10.
DAY 1
Seems like we're starting with Yeonjun. His performance would be a 7/10.
The dance segment was great and it was an energetic performance overall but I don't care too much for his songs. Especially the specific ones he performed. That being said, it is nice that his mic was on.
They did well for a rookie. Or at least I think they are. 7/10
Idk any of the members so I can't comment on anything specific.
They did great. 8/10.
I really enjoy watching them perform because they know how to command the stage and even they know that. Great that the mic was live but Ahyeon needs a better vocal coach. Not because she's bad but because she needs someone else to guide her to understand her limits.
As a theatre actor, I have very often seen singers who are unable to understand the importance of knowing your limit and respecting that it is a limit for a reason. The backlash from that is insane and I would hate to see that happen to her because it would subject her to more hate than she already has to go through. YG doesn't exactly make things better.
The ahjussis did not deserve the 11 minutes they were granted. Mid performance.
DAY 2
They did well. 7/10.
It's been awhile since I've watched them performan and they did not disappoint.
It was nice that their mics were on but the backtrack was loud. 7/10.
Loved Ningning's little solo in the intro segment and I wish we could've seen more seeing as she's AESPA's second best dancer but I guess not. Stage presence was still very much awkward the entire perf but is a slight improvement from GMA and I wish they had delivered more than dry facial expressions.
I'll say it again: was that supposed to be contemporary? (in reference to Tarzzan's intro) Cuz uhm...6.5/10
Again, loved that the mics were on. Only Woochan and Youngseo were interesting to watch. Tarzzan gave his usual fuck boy rap and swag. Annie..idek tbh. She was just there. Disappeared for a hot min then reappeared like ok girl.
Bailey looked awkward the entire time, I'm so sorry. I liked her dance break but I often feel her facial expressions are extremely exaggerated and I can't even lie, she and Tarzzan would rank very last, imo, if it came to performing. They have yet to reach a proficient level in the art of giving energy and visual expressions without doing too much. Bailey especially.
This performance only solidified my opinion that Youngseo does not fit the group's concept.
8/10.
Rami should've been Rumi. Not because Ahyeon did a bad job but because, imo, Ahyeon did not convey the same warm tone as the original. That same tone is what makes the original so appealing. Rami would've been perfect for that but I'm aware she would not be Rumi even if she were in perfect condition.
Ahyeon was going UP UP there at the end. Unnecessary.
Yeah. That's everybody I care I about.
Thank you for sitting through my yap session and I hope you enjoyed it.
