What's your take on long breaks in Kpop Music Videos?

  • Do you like it or not? 17

    1. Don't like it (11) 65%
    2. I don't mind it (5) 29%
    3. I don't watch MVs anymore (1) 6%
    4. I like it (0) 0%

I watched Yuqi's latest MV, and I realized why I don't like watching MVs before I listen to the song itself!

Now, don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with breaks, because it's usually about storytelling, but a lot of times it's just a dance break like in MAMAMOO's "ILLELLA" for example. I wasn't a big fan of that either, btw. It's not in the original song.

This was kinda flat and short too.

This version is MUCH, MUCH better produced, but everything is better with live band.

Anyway, what's your opinion, do you like breaks (dance or storytelling version) or not?

  • The worst thing when I press play and the music doesn't start. I give it ten seconds before I shut it down.

I still haven't seen those first few NewJeans videos.

This is why I start with the song. If I like the song, I will watch the MV.

Music Videos like ARTMS' latest short movie version or IU's Love Wins All, absolutely worth the time watching it, but ONLY after you listened to the song.

I'd rather have something at the beginning (or end) of an MV than a break mid-song. Breaking up the song is the worst thing you can do.

  • Do y'all remember when T-ara would have like fifteen minute music videos of which a non-contiguous four minutes would contain the actual song the music video is for. And sometimes they would have some other song in there altogether!

Interrupting the song right in the middle of the bridge!

This is the only time I will allow it, because the song really is that damn good.

Oh the good old days. T-ara said: "We're gonna T-ara it apart."

Okay, this was a bad pun, it's too late.😂

  • It depends, I would rather it's in the beginning or in the end then in the middle of the song like it breaks the flow. I prefer watching lyric videos made by fans....

I do that too because it's better than reading lyrics on Genius or even on Spotify. 😂

  • I have no problems with that

it's suppose to be a music VIDEO - people forget the video part

a lot of MVs are just the artists doing something random whilst the song is playing with no rhyme or reason - I miss the days where the MV told a story

  • I hate the break in Christmas Evel.

Felix actually starts singing at the drop before he gets cut off. Like how difficult was it to keep it clean and stop 0.02 seconds before.

  • Interludes on MVs are generally fine, even desirable. MVs tell a story, and they can do it with just visuals for part of a song.

As for audio only version of songs like you might find in Spotify or YT Music, i love when they let the song breathe by pausing the vocals and letting instruments just take over, or even pausing both the singing and music completely.

Yooa's debut single is still one of the best Kpop solo songs ever made and i LOVE the musical pauses here.

One of the greatest songs in all of Kpop also uses an unexpected pause for dramatic effect. Beautiful.

  • Generally I hate it. You can tell a great story without need for any pauses or dialogue (see Aespa Armageddon for the best example).

    MV storytelling at it’s best:

Usually, a long break means I just won’t watch the MV more than once and go straight to the lives instead.
