I feel pissed off for him because he was obviously making a joke and if he were PD pick everyone would've bust out laughing and praised him for his wit, but instead everyone stares at him like he just cursed at them
and even if he wasn't joking, is was his statement really that out-of-line? Visual is a vital position and essential to almost every successful kpop group, as long as he tries hard to make up for his lack of abilities I don't see what's wrong with claiming visual as his position.
i was confused but judging by the replies, the consensus seems to be that he was trying to make a joke. i thought it was funny... joke or not lol
also the over-editing of shows like these (survival, reality, the like) makes me frustrated because i don't know how much is "real" or not. like the shocked reaction of the other contestant - how do i know for sure that it was for this? idk how to explain but UGH

I think that's what happens in a lot of these shows. Survival shows over-edit and can make the public go against a person or make you root for them. It's a common tactic, but it does seem they lean into that a lot in survival shows. Also, when I used to watch street woman fighter they played into that to make foreign teams look like bad guys. I think their was a recent controversy about that in the latest season.

It frustrates me!!! Don't manipulate my opinion 
I dunno about this show but in Produce everyone tries out for either vocal, dance or rap, including anyone that would obviously be the visual should they join the group. It's probably not an available answer in the context the question was asked in but they should be able to take a damn joke.

I think the fakeness of these reactions goes beyond editing--I think they're straight up scripted at this point. Like I for real think the pd-nims are telling the trainees and judges "now for these next trainees we need everyone to look super impressed and shocked" because the way everyone jumps out of their seats acting like BTS just entered the room for certain trainees who aren't that popular or talented feels so forced I really do think mnet is instructing everyone who the "special" trainees are that they need to give good reactions to, while other trainees who are equally talented and handsome or even better but aren't being pushed by mnet get lackluster reaction
