Kpop in crisis

  • Idols have followed them....to western magazines, talk shows, awards shows, etc etc. The thing is, no one was able to replicate the number of fans they have.

"Way" shouldn't be a matter of quantity..

Anyway, it is an empty boast, so is empty of followers.

  • They fail to conquer the world, while she stands unconquered at home.

  • First of all, Kpop was NEVER going to be anything more than niche in the West. Sony, UMG, and Warner will NEVER EVER let Korean music become mainstream here, as it would threaten their entire 40 billion dollar chokehold on the US music market. None of their differencemakers can speak an ounce of Korean, they couldnt compete if Kpop were to challenge English songs for supremacy here.

Secondly IU is no longer a A tier singer though. She hasnt had a bonafide national hit since Eight. Celebrity was borderline.

The Izone soloists led by IU's replacement Jo Yuri are poised to replace her.

IU needs to focus on acting. People are going crazy over her Tangerine Kdrama. She's a far better actor than singer lbr here. Although even then, the Izone actress line is MAKING HUGE WAVES, IU needs to watch her back here as well :groovins:

  • At least WhyKnock is right about Bibi defeating IU, albeit momentarily.

    Izone solos .. that's funny.

  • I love how confident you always are, no matter how crazy, insane, weird and wrong your takes are.

Always be you BPH, always be you

  • The Izone soloists led by IU's replacement Jo Yuri are poised to replace her.

Since I am curious about how Soloists do when their popular groups go defunct, Izone provides a good example.

It has been 4 years and this is the marksheet

    Kwon Eun-bi: "Door" (#95), "Glitch" (#42), "Underwater" (#34), "Sabotage" (#66) → Highest: #34

    Jo Yu-ri: "Glassy" (#71), "Love Shhh!" (#91), "Loveable" (#132) → Highest: #71

    Choi Ye-na: "SMiLEY" (#112), "Smartphone" (#124), "Hate Rodrigo" (#11), "Nemonemo" (#153) → Highest: #11

    Lee Chae-yeon: "Hush Rush" (#142), "Knock" (#17), "Don’t" (#126) → Highest: #17

Kang Hye-won: "Winter Poem" (uncharted) → Highest: N/A

Sure they might get a viral hit anytime, but as can anybody.

(But they aren't "toppling" IU anytime soon.. Duh)

This is the reason why BP and BTS will avoid an "official" disbanding, if they do, then the interest in their solo careers will drastically drop.

Wizones were as crazy committed fandom as ARMY and Blinks were. Yet this is the situation now. Being more international isn't going to change the dynamic by much.

So best is to keep throwing group crumbs and leverage the group fandom for their solo careers

  • I don't think it's in crisis but the author brings up some valid points. I think kpop is losing some of it's identity chasing the American market. I think the lack of respect for legacy artist/groups is not a good thing. The Korean music industry is the only entertainment industry that doesn't respect highlight the importance of legacy acts.

I think kpop fans are their own worst enemy. They make issues bigger than it seems, which makes people that aren't into kpop think kpop is bad. For example, LSF Coachella performance wasn't as bad as kpop fans made it out to be and many enjoyed it. Kpop fans never shutting up about it made the performance worse than it seems and gave kpop a bad look. I think most of these hate trains and triablism in a major reason why interest has declined in the west. This is not just a LSF thing and same thing that is happening to Lisa is making kpop look bad by outsiders when they think the performance was whatever but when you see 200k likes on twitter slamming her by kpop stans it makes people think idols aren't talented.

There's many reasons for declining interest in kpop but I think kpop fans contribute to it a lot. People see fandom wars and it makes them lose interest. Lastly, Hybe vs NJZ drama is doing nobody any favors. NJZ has potential to breakthrough and people seeing the drama on twitter makes them not want to get invested in the group or genre. NJZ at the moment is that group that gets people into the genre and having them on hiatus is bad for the industry

  • They paved the way as in open the market. GP has heard about kpop, they might not listen to it but know it exists. Will other groups be successful in USA/the west? It depends on songs and luck. But it's easier now than it was 10 years ago.

All they did was achieve much larger numbers than previous acts. And none of the succeeding acts are able to achieve those numbers.

That's hardly paving the way into uncharted territory.

Anyway it is yet another fan brag, which doesn't have any substance, but such is the nature of fan boasts

They can enjoy it. It is a diversion to the thread.

  • Kpop is not taking off in the West, as it looked to poised in 2020.

It was never going to take off in the west. It was a fad.

Then what about "BTS paved the way"

    If nobody can follow them?

This was always a ridiculous claim because it always implied some level of stability for people to follow. They did not do that as anyone who foresaw K-pop's fad status could tell you.
