Newjean was 4th gen but since NJZ is rebranding and debuting at this time wouldnโt this make them a 5th gen group technically

Is NJZ a 5th gen group?

Is NJZ a 5th gen group?
Opinions on this may differ, but I generally consider the original debut date of a particular artist as the determinant of generation. For example, if Sohโee frโom Wonโder Girls (a Secoโnd Generation group) suddenly decided to debut as a soloist, I would be hesitant to consider her a Fifth Generation artist.

Yes because it does get confusing when members go solo in a new gen
Some people refer to them as the current theyโre in
E.g. Somi debut in 3rd gen but people consider her a 4th gen soloist etc
I think NJZ situation is obviously unique but would be funny and a slap to Hybe if NJZ bested their 5th gen groups too in 5th gen achievements

I think NJZ is 4th gen, they comeback with the exact same lineup, with a new name that's exactly like their old one (let's be honest even if its NJZ we all know at the end it still stands for NewJeanZ)
it's exactly the same group just continuing their career under a new agency so it's not a re-debut
if you want to take a good example of a group who debuted and then totally revamp as a group that you can consider them to be a complete new group is dreamcatcher
They debuted in 2014 as MINX
and they re-brand themselves and re-debuted with a new lineup, new members were added, the name of the group completely change to erase every aspect of their old group and the concept of the group did a 360.
the change between Newjeans and NJZ isn't not important enough, to consider that they are a new group debuting in a new generation

new name, new concept, new sound, new agency, that's a redebut to me.
anyway you don't get to determine the criteria. just the fact they aren't promoting as newjeans under ador anymore is techincally a redebut
.

It's the same members, same group and they perform the same songs as before.

Nobody considered highlight as a 3rd gen group when they lost their name when they left Cube in 2016 and redebuting under AroundUS in 2016 with the same member
Only cuz people knew that a change a name was nothing and highlight was just the continuation of Beast who weren't able to use their name cuz of copyright of Cube
Just like BBgirls isn't consider a 5th gen GG just cuz they change their name, and went to a new company cuz everybody still know that BBgirls is still brave girls and they are a 3rd gen groups.
and Just like how most of us consider VIVIZ a 3rd gen gg because they are entirely made of Gfriend members more than a true 4th gen GG
I don't make the rules, the rules have been made by the tons of precedent we saw in kpop of groups leaving their company and having to change name to avoid the copyright of their previous company.
It's not because it's new jeans now that the rules are going to change, stop embarassing yourself

Is Sooyoung then a first gen artist since she debuted in 2002, or is debut in Korea the deciding factor for you since her Korean debut was with SNSD?

Yoโu bring up a good point. I would still consider her Secoโnd Generation. However, it's not because of the Korean debut aspect, but rather because Sooyoung's time in Route 0 was largely inconsequential.
Of course, whether something is "consequential" or not is subjective. A example that comes to mind: Park Jโin-young (JโYP) celebrated 30 years in the business last year. That would mean he debuted in 1994. And indeed, that was his solo debut. However, his actual debut was in 1992 as part of ๋ฐ์ง์๊ณผ ์ ์ธ๋ (Park Jiโn-young and The New Generation). However, nobโody, including JโYP himself, cares about that, so I guess 1994 it is then.

because the difference is too big. beast debuted like a whole gen before in 2009. and more than that, the difference between 4th and 5th gens is more blurry than it was.
but njz only debuted 2 years ago and went into a 10 month hiatus with barely 2 eps and 2 singles. they're literally still rookies in the process of shaping their identity and their brand.
also viviz is techically a new group/sub unit in my opinion. so they would belong to this gen more than the previous one. just like taeyeon is a 3rd gen soloit while snsd was a 2nd gen gg. yes she released some ballads beforehand but her official debut was during the 3rd gen.
personally i don't even think 5th gen could start before 2026 at least. but apparently ggs who debuted/redebuted in 2024 are 5th gen so...

7th gen

Sooyoung is an intergeneration idol
She's a first gen idol
She's a second gen
Then in 3rd gen and 4th gen she decided to give a chance to the other idols
But then she saw that none of them were capable
So she decided to debut in 5th gen too
And she'll be back to save 6th gen in a way or the other

It's stupid that they have 1 or 2 ep doesn't change anything their debut date doesn't change because of the number of EP
-
it's not a big determinant factor, but as someone mentioned it's a question of impact but also the lifespan/career of a group. njz's carrier impact was intense but also very brief. mostly due to their company blocking them. for example their first full album should have come out a year ago.
what i'm trying to say is that they were in their infancy stage as a group while beast on the other hand were already a fully matured group who had a consequent and full career already.
but the most important part is that they are techincally redebuting so it IS a DEBUT of a new group/brand. Hanni even sayed they will comback with a different concept and sound from njs. so yeah
