"Hitmaker No More? Teddy Loses His Touch… A Missed Opportunity for IZNA and MEOVV"

The Fading Stardom of Teddy: Challenges Facing the Hitmaker

Teddy, renowned for producing hit tracks for major groups like Big Bang, 2NE1, and BLACKPINK, appears to be losing his golden touch. This year, the producer has taken on two rookie girl groups: MEOVV (under his label The Black Label) and IZNA (formed through the survival program I-LAND 2). Despite high expectations, the results have been underwhelming, leaving fans and critics questioning whether Teddy's magic is waning.

    MEOVV: A Quiet Debut

MEOVV debuted in September and made a comeback just two months later, but the buzz surrounding them remains muted. Their initial tracks, "TOXIC" and "BODY," were sleek but lacked the punch needed to captivate audiences. Notably, "TOXIC," which had more of Teddy's input, leaned toward a sentimental style, diverging from the bold sound many associate with a "Teddy girl group." Critics argue that the debut fell short in delivering the strong, attention-grabbing music required for a rookie group to stand out.

IZNA: Underwhelming Momentum Despite Core Fan Support

IZNA had the advantage of pre-existing core fans from I-LAND 2 and showcased their debut performance at the 2024 MAMA AWARDS. However, their title track has been criticized for lacking impact. While the lyrics captured their identity, the melody didn't resonate as a compelling lead single. Fans and critics alike suggest that their B-side track, "TIME BOMB," would have been a better choice to highlight the group's strengths.

    Is Teddy Overstretched?

This is the first time Teddy has managed two girl groups simultaneously, which might explain the noticeable dip in song quality. MEOVV and IZNA both released new music in November, but their tracks failed to chart, signaling a need for recalibration. Observers speculate that the pressure of balancing two groups has diluted Teddy’s signature style, once characterized by a sophisticated blend of YG hip-hop and pop, leaving behind a more generic sound.

Challenges Ahead for the “Father of 12 Daughters”

As the head producer for these groups, Teddy holds significant responsibility for shaping their musical identity and public appeal. With MEOVV’s 5 members and IZNA’s 7, Teddy faces mounting pressure to deliver. It’s crucial for him to reevaluate what fans and the market expect from his production style and tailor his work to suit each group's distinct strengths.

For now, the K-pop industry watches to see if Teddy can regain his footing and guide his "12 daughters" toward success. His name, once synonymous with hits, must once again shine to elevate the groups he champions.

    1. I wish they were more proactive in their activities, but it’s a shame they stick to the same old method and the music is a bit disappointing…. They seem to lack planning skills

    2. Honestly Blackpink has very good members

    3. MEOVV has never appeared in the media so I don’t know their faces or their popularity…

    4. It’s boring… Teddy originally specialized in hip hop, but you don’t see that in the groups he produces, and it’s compared to BabyMonster, who is good at hip hop

    5. I don’t know what MEOVV wants to do… They don’t promote much… Blackpink’s method can only be done when there are Blackpink members…

    6. Their songs aren’t that good ㅠㅠ

    7. It’s just that they didn’t promote properly

    8. I think Teddy did well thanks to the combination of YG’s name value and the expectations for YG idols

    9. I don’t know the difference between these two groups

    10. Who are they?

  • MEOVV is already charting on Melon and won 2024 MAMA Rookie Award

izna barely debuted 10 days ago and they've sold 250k in a week

what else do people want from them lol?

#1 on Melon and million sellers right away?

  • Teddy hasn't even produced a single song for MEOVV.

Different strokes for different folks. I happen to love all of MEOVV's songs so far. It's just music at the end of the day. I feel like people sensationalize their criticism when it comes to a sound they don't like.

I want as many songs that sound like BLACKPINK's "How You Like That" as possible, but I acknowledge some people just don't like that type of music.

It's just like how I don't get the hype for "Tomboy," "Queencard," "Superlady," "Nxde," "Wife," or "Klaxon" by (G)I-DLE, but I still acknowledge they're a great, iconic, legendary, talented, and skilled group. I prefer their earlier music; that's all.

I won't sensationalize it by saying Soyeon's losing her touch.

Or how I don't like what ITZY's doing with songs like "GOLD," but I still like the members and their other songs. The songs I don't like are just part of their sound and style, and I'll just accept that I don't like it.

That's all a me thing. It doesn't mean anybody's losing their touch.

  • Izna literally debuted a week ago. Not everyone is gonna come out of the gates with a hit song. Plus iland kinda flopped in korea so I wasn’t expecting them to chart well there anyway.

that being said izna have already sold over 250k albums which is an amazing start. hopefully their future music will captivate more people
