    It’s kind of hard to explain but in sign language there’s a lot of things that don’t translate right or mean smth else

    For example:

    When you do the sign for the word “finished or done” you do the hand sign and mouth the word “fish” at the same time. **it’s because the word fish and finish have very similar mouth movements so it adds more clarity, a lot of signs have mouth movements or facial expressions (technically called non manual markers) that go with them which are necessary or else you might be signing something completely different*

    So back to “fish”.

    Since I’m hearing, I sometimes find myself not just mouthing but saying out loud. lol. So when I’m with other hearing signers, we’ll be like “hey you fish??” Which translates to “are you finished/are you done?”

    Another variation of this, which is kinda a joke lol is to do the actual sign for “fish” in asl,

    it means the same thing, “done”. It’s like an inside joke.

    ANOTHER variation is saying fish in other languages, for example, “pescado???? “Yep pescado”

    “yú?? yeppp yú!”

    “fisch???? almostt”

    “sakana???” “Nope.” “Well hurry up”

    Lmaoooooo u get the idea.


    There’s a lot like this.

    The sign for “what are u doing/what did you do” is paired with mouthing “dododo” lollll

    So like the other one, instead of asking smb, what’s up/what are u doing, we might just say “dodo???” Or “dododo?” ;judgingpepe:


    ANOTHER like this is the sign for big and small.

    The mouth movement for big is “cha” so instead of saying big one could say, “cha!” Orr like “wow…… cha!”

    For small the mouth movement is “oooh” or “wooo” so same thing, we say those unstead of the actual word.

    One of my faves is for the mouth movement for “far far in the past” and “far far in the future” they have different hand motions but the mouth movement is the same..

    the mouth movement is “balalalalala” so depending on the tone you say it in or the context, it can mean either.
