IU's 'LILAC': Bop or Flop?

  • I'm wondering whether the production team deliberately wanted to court comparison to Spring Day, with the train concept and the single tree animation. They had to know people will make connections.

I wondered the same thing, Aristophenes...

As for the song, *meh*. It’s a standard backgroundy nothing song for me. Plus, it’s my personal thing that I really don’t enjoy those airy fairy breathy cutesy soprano voices, and she *reeeeally* leans into that with this song. I know some people will enjoy that and say it fits the concept but it just turns me off straight away.

  • Bop. Her voice is like buttahh. I prefer this to Celebrity, certainly, but I love City Pop and retro sounds, so, it's up my alley.

  • love her voice but the song not so much. Lilac and celebrity both are blop for me. I plan to listen to the whole album later. i always found her bside songs better than tittle track, hope i wont be disappointed.

  • The vocals were good and weren't as electronic as some recent singles we've heard, the video was well-filmed.

The lyrics were... empty. Celebrity felt more personal and meaningful.

The train as a metaphor was additionally deployed in "You and I" to denote the passage of time and/or site to dream, so, I feel more of a connection to her earlier MV. Edit: Particularly, since "You & I" came out, what, a decade ago? Also, Jung Jae-hyung reappears a decade later, after his last IU MV appearance in "Good Day." She exits the train, he waves goodbye. She awaits for the next ride. Closing of a chapter, eh?

She does seem to reference Old Boy, definitely, and, maybe, Snowpiercer?

And the lone tree in Olympic Park is a pretty popular, famous spot.

  • I don't like it as much as some of her other songs. Something about it sounds very familiar so that was distracting, I was trying to figure out where I heard it before, especially the pre-chorus.

It's nice sounding though, I'd put it on IU playlist if I ever get around to making one.

  • bop, she looks flawless too!

  • Its elegant and sweet but just like with Blueming as title track, its just alright?

Good label decision to drop an MV for Coin. That one definitely has a better hook and shows off IU's maturity. The gambling concept is probably a bit risque to do though since IU' still known as nation's sweetheart/Kpop Taylor Swift..

  • I would say BOP! I liked the city pop vibe but it didn't seem as original as some of her other music

I tried mixing LILAC with some other songs if you want to check it out! :nervousk:
